I wish to learn to play the keybaord. Though I dont want to go down the private leasson route yet. Are there any computer programs out there that teach you to play, if so which programs should I be looking at? I currently own a Casio MIDI keyboard.

you can watch youtube videos of people playing popular songs on the piano, some are even presented as a tutorial

Check out Shaun Cheek's lessons on YouTube, this one is Drops of Jupiter by Train

If your little Casio jobbie has a metronome, that might help if you have trouble keeping the tempo yourself

Just go to Allans in the mall, go to the transcription section and buy any of the $30 intro books, you don't need a computer program.

Make sure you learn Theory.
Then you can move onto other instruments.

I think by learning tougher songs you will gain all the theory you need for other instruments

I realize you said you don't want to go done the private lesson route, but honestly it is much better when you're learning to gave someone there making sure you're not forming bad habits, cause if you want to continue, it's harder to get better without good technique.
Also yeah, learn the theory.

You'll progress much faster with lessons. You can of course supplement lessons with computer learning but you definitely will benefit from feedback on your technique early on.

And find a teacher that gives time to both sight reading and playing by ear.

Just so everyone here knows eu4ia reckons the world is only 6000 years old and also thinks that dragons are the same as dinosaurs.

I reckon it is pretty relevant because it lets people know to pretty much ignore everything you say.

So if you dont agree with one of his beliefs then everything he says must be wrong ? haha

When i first started playing a friend who played at Church suggested learning the Emaj scale because it gave the best workout for hand exercising.

Start on the E with your thumb. (right hand)
F# G# 1st and 2nd finger
now the important part
bring ur thumb under those 2 fingers and play the A
then continue with your fingers 3rd finger D# and bring the thumb under to play the E octave.
Repeat that up and down the KBD.

Best tip i ever got.

Nah you'll find I am actually pretty tolerant of other peoples beliefs.

Just when people say things like the world is only 6000 years old (seriously I almost laugh everytime I type that) and explain dinosaurs by saying that the mythology of dragons actually came from dinosaurs and humans living together (haha I actually did laugh then) it is a pretty obvious sign that someone is retarded or at least has some sort of severe emotional problems or something.

I didn't know Casio made keyboards, prob wouldn't trust it. I'd recommend starting with something like a Logitech Access 600. If you're taking the plunge and making that jump from console controller to keyboard though, realistically it's pretty pointless going keyboard only - you're still going to get smashed by any keyboard+mouse user with any ability.

Definitely try to take on the keyboard and mouse combo at the same time. You'll pick them up faster by training simultaneously than trying to get the hang of them one at a time.

i hated learning piano as a kid but if you got the passion for it go for it!

a good teacher will take you as long way though, much more disciplined. depends what style of music you wanna play i guess.
