Ok so i've been trying to wrap my mind around this whole HDMI thing and was wondering if some people wouldn't mind helping me out since i'm pretty tech stupid with these things. Wiki just made me more confused. I want to buy a PS3 that I can hook up to a new PC monitor I plan on buying as well however I want to be sure i'm not wasting my money on something that won't work. HDMI is basiclly a type of video/audio cord that is combined right? Well what happens if I try to hook a HDMI cable into something that doesn't have audio capabilities like a PC monitor?
Will I be able to use the standard red and white audio cables to plug into my speakers (they work with my 360 perfectly) also so I can use my monitor for my PC and PS3 but speakers for sound? Here is what I have planned so far so can you guys tell me if it'll work? The less money I have to spend the better too if i'm missing something. The monitor is from Dell, and is only $500 which I thought was pretty good considering the size and all. It's a "Dell S2409W 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor" which is on their site. Think this should work and do what I need it to? |

have you found a monitor with hdmi input?
chances are if it has hdmi, it will have speakers built in, or someway of outputting the sound to something with speakers (even a headphone jack would work) ok, quick google tells me there are monitors around with hdmi input, so yer, you can definatley do what you want to |

Yes, the PS3 allows you to use the HDMI output for the video, and the bundled cables or optical for your audio output. I'm currently using a similar setup. I have HDMI going from the PS3 to my TV, and an optical cable going from the PS3 to my receiver. You shouldn't have any problems using the red and white cables the console comes with for your audio output.

This is what i did with my xbox360. I'm running a hdmi cable straight to my monitor (22" asus) but i had hit a snag. The hdmi port and the hd av cable jacks are right next to eachother on the 360, So i had to do a little modding of the cable to get it to fit.
But now it works awsome especially since 360's now support 1680x1050 :). |
