So apparently we're about to get 15 more free to air channels, maybe TV won't suck balls so frequently now?
I could never justify the investment of Foxtel and *hate* the idea of signing up to a contract for something when I move around a lot

Freeview will launch in Australian in 2009.

The ABC, SBS, the Seven Network, the Nine Network, Network TEN, Prime, WIN and Southern Cross have joined forces to deliver the free-to-air digital television platform. The media companies will comprise a new not-for-profit organisation, chaired by the ABC’s Kim Dalton.

Freeview will offer 15 television channels from free-to-air broadcasters on digital platforms, including new channels from the big three commercial networks. It will not include subscription TV.

Sounds like more world news, documentary and sports only channels to me. I doubt we're going to see any movie channels similar to what foxtel/optus have.

Freeview will be launching an awareness campaign in the coming months to ensure consumers are ready for when the full suite of 15 Freeview channels are available next year.

Ahead of the launch, Freeview is working with manufacturers to ensure appropriate technical standards are met on all television or digital set-top-box equipment that will carry the Freeview badge.

So does that mean all of us with current tech HD or SD digital tuners have to go out and buy yet another set top box?

Its just a matter of running a channel refresh on the standard bunch of digi boxes i believe.. well the compatible ones anyway (hehe that didn't help much) But in the UK all the channels are just along the digi frequencies.. eg ch 1-69 or whatever the box goes up to (760mhz or something?)

I was under the impression there is around 1000 7MHz channels ?
Or are you confusing Digital TV with IP TV ?

ja, had it in the UK for years, about 35 channels. e4 and a few others where awsome. They are now running it in NZ but only about 6 channels.

Urr... 15 channels...

ABC
ABC HD
(Maybe new ABC Channel)
SBS
SBS News
SBS HD
Seven
Seven HD
(Maybe new Seven Channel)
Nine
Nine HD
(Maybe new Nine Channel)
Ten
Ten HD
Ten Sports

(thats 15)

Don't get carried away. This will be very similar to the onset of the "HD" channels where they show some content that is the same, and some that is different... but I wouldn't be expecting anything like Foxtel.

I should mention - As far as I'm aware, the only reason why its being "branded" as Freeview and not just "extra channels" is because it will render our STB's useless (due to a non-standard EPG) and will require people to buy new STB's that are "Freeview Certified".

Yey this makes me so happy. Also have never felt justified in signing on to pay TV. Looks like it must be time to get a set top box or, god willing, a MASSIVE HDTV.

yer, all these people saying "we're glad this is coming, we hate foxtel" i think you will find these services will be a mile behind what foxtel currently broadcasts;

i also dont think foxtel is particularly worried by these services, they are probably more worried that no one has any money and noone is signing up

the foxtel deals out atm are pretty good;

Looks like Channel 10 and 9 are going to both have a sport channel or at least a lot more sport. Channel 9 just announced that it will be showing English Super League while 10 has a lot of yank sports already on.

Already have foxsports but it will be good to get some free HD sport.

FreeView - you get what you pay for.

FreeView is an appeal to advertisers to stick with Free to air TV.
Foxtel is finally starting to make inroads into Free TVs advertising.
Digital TV ratings will start soon and Foxtel will be going head to head with Free To Air.

Foxtel is overpriced and underquality but i wouldnt live with out it.

2nd box is $20 per month and you get everything the first box gets.

Heres some 'inside' information on FreeView.

Freeview will only be available to users that have recievers that carry the special FreeView software. So everything that is currently on the market cant view FreeView with its own EPG.
The exclusive EPG will be encrypted blocking out 3rd party Tv Guides and may be capable of PayPerView styled viewing.

What's the freeview software going to do?
I don't want another f***ing reciever, I don't even have one! Only the built in one with the TV!
Are the regular channels going to be watchable?

The real battle is the EPG which i think will start to fill with Ads.
Also a Crippled FreeView PVR could contain functions such as limitting your ability to skip ads or making you watch an unskipable ad before every program.

Imagine something like those annoying Piracy Ads on DVDs

Personally i think the idea is to create a a 2 tier Free to Air where HD First run programming might be PayPerView Or you may be Forced to watch Ads.

OHHHHHHHH THE HUUUUUMANITYYYYYYYYY

sounds way more gay when faceman said it ^

I wont be going out of my way to upgrade if it means i get unskipable ads etc
even if it means more channels, i dunno too many people that will bother

making this thing a financial pot hole until enough people have just aquired new tv's over time - ie, not 'just' to get these new chans

I thought I would revive this to post... Clicky

Seven, Seven HD, Seven SD
Nine, Nine HD, Nine SD
Ten, Ten HD, One HD
ABC, ABC HD, ABC2
SBS, SBS HD, SBS2.

Basically, freeview ammounts to 3 extral free to air channels (One HD is Ten's 24hr sports channel, the other networks will be using SD at this point).

Woo.

Even after reading all the guff I still don't know what the f*** this thing is about.. all it seems to do is sell hardware with it's logo on it in the vain hope of attracting the mums and pops who think they are getting 15 channels for free. Sure you get an extra one or two .. but they'll probably be s***e anyway.

Is that the jist?

Yeah i didnt quite get the point at first, cause I was looking at it from a technical point of view, eg what are we getting that we dont already have?

But I dont think thats the point of it, its basically all the free-to-air channels getting together and trying to package what they already do to make it seem like they are competing with foxtel, but for free, when in reality they are just giving you exactly what they always have.

I dont get why they have say ten and ten sd, so what is ten, below sd?

Damn straight.

Many yrs ago we had Foxtel - we were happy. Then Foxtel started putting on ads - we felt like idiots. We cancelled with Foxtel. Foxtel then wastes millions of dollars on stuffing our letterboxes with their junkmail and paying annoying ppl to harass the public at Shopping Centres.

fail.

Channel proliferation makes little sense, from an advertising point of view; it just makes it harder for an advertiser to reach all of the eyeballs they want to, because the eyeballs are spread across more places. So, from a business perspective, the extra channels will not necessarily mean extra revenue (since media buyers will go down the cost per eyeball route), it just means more work to get that same revenue.

Of course, from a consumer perspective, extra content should be a good thing - provided they don't get lazy with it. But who am I kidding. Of course they'll get lazy with it, and it'll end up like TV1 and the hundred other channels on fox that I don't watch any more. Old and stale.

The only reason for me to get foxtel would be for the english premier league but i'm not paying $40 - $50 for it only to get a bunch of other rubbish channels that i don't want.
