Well this has to suck.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The astronaut who lost her tool bag on a spacewalk admitted Wednesday that she made a mistake by not checking to see if the sack was tied down, and said she's still smarting over the whole thing.

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper said in an interview with The Associated Press that it was "very disheartening" to lose her bag full of tools. She was trying to clean up grease that had oozed out of a grease gun in the backpack-size bag, when the tote and everything in it floated away Tuesday.

f*** space is AWESOME!@# I love how it just floats off and she grabs at it. I guess it will just burn up in the atmosphere or something?

Yeah I'd imagine eventually, there is still enough atmosphere at that altitude to cause drag and bring it down instead of maintaining its orbit. Even the ISS itself needs a boost every few months to fix its orbit from what I understand.

Probably at some point. Untill then it will be yet another piece of 'Space junk' that we have put up there.
There are a few Companies that track all this stuff so that launches can be done safely (Hitting these things while hurtleing through space is deadly) they track stuff about the size of a 20c coin, so a Backpack shouldn't be too hard to track.

Won't it just go into orbit and float around the planet?

Also NASA will be spewin when the next shuttle goes up and the tool bag gets stuck in an engine.

There was also comment in one report that the astronauts spotted some screws floating past that were dropped on a previous spacewalk. What are the chances of that?

I love how with all those millions of dollars of technology they don't have something that can snag a slowly floating item.
