Topic: Good Pedestal Fans?

It may seem like a strange thing to ask, but every summer we pull out the crappy $20 fans from crazy clarks out of the storage and they're usually either dead or noisy.

Does anyone know of any good quality brands to look for? maybe a big steel one or something? and more importantly where's a good place to find them.

I got one for $40 from Bunnings and it has a remote which I thought was just a dumb gimmick but considering my aircon is only in the loungeroom, its good to be able to lie in bed and turn it on/off at night.

I don't think the brand matters, but if you're going for strength go for steel blades they are mighty powerful. You'll find them at bunnings. Failing that buy an aircon, I've got 3 boxed aircons i need to get rid off hah.

Fans suck power just like air-cons.
If you have a small room that you spend a lot of time in then its really not that expensive to air-con it.
Cooling an entire house is a huge waste of money.

Personally i only have my Bedroom Air-Con.
Cant sleep with fans on me. Feels like Im drying out.

so a fan that pushes wet air at you dry's you out but something that actually removes moisture from the air doesnt?

Don't get one of those huge steel workshop fans unless you want to be blown away and have it rearrange the furniture in your house for you. I've got a cheap k-mart fan that I have on while I sleep 365 days a year (my room is hot even in winter) and it's been going for years.

I also have a mitre 10 fan that has 5 curved blades on it, this thing bushes out some serious air on 3 but it's rarely ever on so not sure on how long it would last.

Cant sleep with fans on me. Feels like Im drying out.

I'm the opposite, I can't sleep without a fan on. I feel like I can't breathe without air moving over me while I sleep even if I sleep with the window and door wide open.

You know AC actually dries the air (dehumidifies) whereas fans just blow it around?

Also, a fan uses like a 10th of the power of an AC system.

I find AC AND a fan is the real win

it's mainly for our lounge room, we have ceiling fans in the other rooms. But the lounge room has a high peaked ceiling and no door to close and seal off the room from the rest of the house so an aircon won't work.

What, so the air goes into the kitchen and a few corridors, how huge could your house be?

thermite, you're a tool. It's obviously not efficient for them to get air conditioning. And any idiot can see that

Yeah you'd need a half decent system to cool that entire area.
Which is $$++
I got a portable air con that was meant to be really strong, and it didn't cool my lounge room because of the kitchen and corridoors. It just couldn't handle the area.

it goes through to about 2/3s of our house, the dining room, kitchen laundry and hallway are all one big high ceiling area.

You would probably find that a cassette in the roof would do a reasonable job of just cooling that area. You need a lot less kw and its only slightly more than a traditional unit. If you can put it in yourself all the better as they are more expensive to install

I went out and bought a Portable air conditioner from Sam's Warehouse in garden city (where crazy clarks used to be) for $400.

Sucks the humidity out of the air and when the internal tank fills up with water it stops and beeps to let you know that its full.

Comes with custom window kit for easy installation and remote control. Cools my master bedroom surprisingly well (4 by 5)

so does it also blow cool air ? thermostat ?

My mothers a bad asthmatic and dehumidifying the air seems to help her breathing.

They had a metal pedestal fan at Hardly Normal for 90 bucks. About the same size fan as normal but blew like hurricane. Wish i had one...

I had one of those portable ones for a long while, mine didnt have an internal tank though
it sucked balls because you had to attach a hose to it and run the water outside or down a drain etc - not always possible

for cooling power though, 4 out of 5 stars

FaceMan, yes it blows cold air, it's an air conditioner.

tequila: this one that i bought also gives you the option of attaching a hose and running the water externally, but why would you when it takes 20 seconds to tip out the water in the tank and putting it back in.

GuessWho, is your's loud as f***?! I couldn't sleep with mine on in the room, as it used to make random loud noises (compressor shutting off).

It's a constant sort of humming. It's definitely louder than the split air conditioner in the living room, but not enough to cause you not to sleep at night. Well for me anyway.

You get used to the sound a lot quicker than getting used to the heat.

I bought some remote control ones from Woolies, look good, no noise after a year and REMOTE CONTROL yay.
Timer function, osolate, fan speed and something else I forget all on the remote(and fan itself)

Oh and usually $35 but they on special every now and then, i got mine for $20 each. This was just over a year ago but i still see them from time to time.
