looking for a wireless keyboard and mouse preferable something that is rechargeable and with 2 batteries... like the g7

what do people have and how do you find it?

eventually this will be used for a htpc and the gaming rig will move and have wired mouse/kb - but price is no dramas

for my medias, i just got the cheapest bottom of the line logitech jobbys

works perfectlyw ith the receiver approx 2 meters away (just has to be facing the keyboard/mouse)

keyboard takes two batteries, never replaced them, mouse takes two, replace them fairly regularly;

i dont think theres much better than the g7 unless a newer version of it, not sure about keyboards

not suitable for gaming but if you have a HTPC the logitech dinovo mini is pure win.

logitech s520 looks pretty spiffy.

that might be alright except for the layout of the insert,home,pageup/down end and delete part between backspace and numlock

A little off-topic, but for laptops, I can't recommend this guy enough. Best tracking I've ever had from a laptop mouse, works on anything except shiny/transparent surfaces, batteries last forever and the USB receiver is about the size of a piece of gum.

Just curious why you'd choose a mouse that takes batteries over a mouse that charges in a docking station.

my favourite wireless keyboard - small footprint, great feel ;) (same as the new macbooks).

Fair enough but why exactly? Wouldn't it be more of a pita having to swap batteries around all the time? Bare in mind I've never touched cordless mice or keyboards before but am in a similar situation to the OP, need to look for something in the near future for a HTPC solution.

Cordless stuff is fantastic. I will never ever buy a corded mouse/keyboard. I don't like the docking stations coz you're constantly having to charge/swap them, and after a while they don't hold the battery thing in as securely anymore. My normal batteries last me aaaaaaages and are less hassle imo

I have the Logitech combo (MX3000? I can't remember).

Keyboard has all the media controls which is great as my amp isn't in easy reach from the desk (to change volume). Both the mouse and keyboard take 2 x AA batteries which last for ages. Over 1 year in keyboard and probably about 4 months in mouse (using Energizer Alkaline).

I use a logitech mx3000 combo at work and get about 6 months on the keyboard battery and 2 - 3 months on the mouse, just using generic dick smith batteries.

Also, corded mice and keyboards are like CRT monitors, out dated.

my keyboard sits in the same place on my desk, wireless is a tonne of wank so I've gone back to wired keyboard

I have been through many rechargeable mice where the recharged stops charging. I noticed on the weekend that the mx1000 or whatever is sitting in the unplugged charger and we've been using a cheapo wired mouse for a month or so.

Anyone recommend a good wired mouse ?

i have the mx5000 and its s***.

completely broken in EHCI mode, though that could just be the s***ty dongle.

I use a Logitech MX400 (corded) at work, it's great.

For $33 from MSY, you can't go wrong.

I use MS Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 and Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 that I bought together for about... $80ish I think? Love them.

Ok thanks. It's handy to know these things when looking at options. I'm keeping an eye out for these Microsoft blue laser mice due in the next couple months with I believe run on batteries anyway.

I just use my MCE remote to control my computer, does it have to be a keyboard + mouse?

i use that mouse pictured above and it annoys the s*** out of me. much prefer my g5 gaming mouse - it's so much lighter.

the best kb/mouse combo i've ever used was one of the older ms intellitype pro kb and ms 5 button optical mouse. like the way the thumb buttons are shaped on the mouse and the kb, was the shiznit.

heaps of buttons, software was fully customizable, all my programs from the top of my kb and the wheel+back/forward buttone on the left hand side were so useful!
although now that i have a new job, a new comp is in the wings and that mx5500 does look pretty neat. and this machine will be relegated to the third division. i mean, htpc, and that dinovo is pure sex.

yep works fine with Windows, it's just a bluetooth keyboard. I don't know what the go is with OS X being listed as a requirement..

I wish Apple's mouse was better - well, the scroll ball's just way too small, and wears out. But yeah, love the keyboard! I'll need to replace my mx510 soon, that ms blue laser mouse looks good.

The G7 is the greatest mouse I have ever had the pleasure of using. It is smooth, accurate, comfortable, convenient and reliable. I moved it over to my Hackintosh recently (With a G15 keyboard) and I'm now using an MX5500 on my normal PC.

The MX5500 is pretty good. The keyboard is extremey comfortable, has great features and the keys are whisper quiet. The mouse is also very comfortable (the most comfortable I've ever used) and feature rich. The Bluetooth dongle is also incredibly handy. My only complaint with the set is the accuracy of the mouse. It's hard to explain, but it just doesn't feel as accurate as the G7. I'm normally the first person to laugh at d*******s who think they can tell the difference between a wired and a good wireless mouse or who claim they can tell the difference between a 160kbps MP3 and a 192kbps one, but I'd take the G7's workings in a MX Revolution's shell anyday.

the G7 is massively overrated and breaks far too often/easily.

I've had 2, and both have had minor things break on them months after buying.

I love the cartridge style of battery charging, but i couldn't justify buying a third.

i used to love my g7 untill it started freezing last week. every now and then it freezes for about 5-30 secs. pisses me off. hopefully umart will replace it since logitech told me its still under warranty.

yeah that happens to mine as well ravn0s ... unplugging it from the usb port and cycling the mouse fixes it but annoying nevertheless

yer it unfreezes it, but then 30 secs later it freezes again. instead of getting a replacement i think i might just go buy a g9

G7 is end of line now.

if you're after a WIRED gaming mouse, the G9 is the new option, but I prefer the G5, still the same shape as the G7 with all the wiredy goodness, so no more running out of batteries. I'm quite happy with the reliability of the Logitech gear we sell these days, the batteries last forever, and they don't break nearly as much as I would have expected.

My ultimate kit is the G5 and G15, even though the G5 is outdated, it's still my favourite just because of the feel. MX revolution, I don't like that the scroll wheel button is no longer a button, it's simply the toggle between free-spin scroll and clicking scroll. the middle mouse button is now further down towards the middle of the mouse, therefore making you bend your middle finger up to click it.

Not bananas man!


if you're looking for a good wireless set, go the Dinovo Media Desktop. That's the money. It's bluetooth for better use with media machines, and it's got a decent feeling mouse also.

My G7 has been perfect and is still going strong. It's used by all sorts from my 8yo to my harccore TF2 playing 16yo. Best mouse I've ever had. I'll be a sad crusty old man when the day comes to replace it.
