so, im trying to play games on my e6850 and anal probe is going off in game coz my cpu is hitting 70 degrees

whats my best option to replace the stock cooling?

needs to be air based (im not seting up water cooling), i dont care if its loud, i just want my cpu never to get hot ever again

(runs at stock, id love to run it at 3.6 if cooling is good enough to keep temps down)

Should also add using a decent thermal paste will make a bit of difference too, get rid of that thermal tape s*** if you get it with a heat sink and use arctic silver or similar.

Mate of mine just got one of these. His overclocked Q6600 runs under normal load at 25deg.

do what any real man does, just turn the alerts off. If it gets too hot, the PC will reset.

That's a fair bit of weight to be hanging off your motherboard, if you're going to move the computer with that thing attached I'd be worried about it ripping through the motherboard.

edit: also agree with turning off alerts, I don't even have any monitor proggies running. I figure since my pc doesn't hang or freeze it must be fine.

Woop, i have the same CPU as you but when i ran cpuz it says my multipier is only running at 6 x (not 9 like it is meant to be) any idea why it would be underclocked when i have not changed anything?

pyro: When you're not doing anything they run at 6x to save power/heat production. Mine's at 9 because I had prime95 going to make it get hot for spook to compare temperatures. Try it for yourself. You can usually disable that feature in your BIOS if it bothers you.

Thanks i just read that myself.. i did check in bios also and found that it was set to not go any higher than 7 which i though was weird for a default setting.. changed it to 9 and all happy now :)

i just bought one of these.. they outperform the zalman and is very quiet..

bit pricey but i'm really happy with it.. also comes with 2 extra cables that decrease the voltage so you can have normal, quiet and cant hear s***..

i chose the blue cant hear s*** adapter and i cant hear it.. i had to check a few times to make sure it was working.

its heavy however the mount is rock solid and doesnt bend or warp the mobo

all in all 9/10 minus 1 point for price.. i paid about 66 euro delivered

maybe you can get it cheaper in aus

also it comes with mounting kits for 775 and AMD which is handy if your an AMD fgt

+1 for the Zalman... I don't even have a rear case fan anymore, this thing blows enough out the rear fan grille and I can turn it up if i really need to (i just keep it on lowest and forget about it, but I'm not overclocked).

spook, i would check that your stock heat sink isn't just full of dust and crap which is stopping it working.

Definately made a difference, I played with some overclocking (3.75G .. so not too insane) ran the fan at about 40/60%.

went for the thermaltake big typhoon

was put off the zalman by it having retarded lights on it

i've got a big typhoon spooky, it works well on my C2D (e8400) which is overclocked to 3.6GHz.

There is no need to be worried though, the mounting mechanisms used in the top range coolers make it impossible for it to happen.

Few things that need to be clarified:

The Zalman coolers are ok, they tend to be a bitch to install and are more prone to cutting you. There are other coolers that are vastly superior in value and provide much better cooling.

MX-2 is the thermal paste to get, it's better than AS and it takes only a fraction of the time to cure.

Large FTT's isn't the test to use to determine stability of CPU overclocks.

Overclocking with Speedstep still on is only going to cause you issues / grief. If you're worried about the power use, you wouldn't be overclocking in the first place.

How badly full of dust was your stock cooler Spook?

Also you might want to look at the temp readings provided by Everest, Realtemp and Coretemp.

Your initial temps seem a tad high for a stock intel CPU. Should only be round 40 at best.

yer, original cooler was pretty dusty, ill give my case a propper clean out over the weekend

as for temps, im happy that its cooler, machine has never crashed due to heat (as far as i can tell) so im pretty sure its all good:
note: my bios temps pretty much match my asus probe temps
