The House of Fruit is doing a press event today to launch the worst-kept secret to date - revamped notebooks. Apparently the white/black plastic macbook is out, and in comes an aluminium model (making all the units Eco-friendly and consistent).
Apparently the new Pro notebooks have no buttons for the trackpad, instead using an interface not unlike the iPhone. Tapping trackpads for button clicks, incites pure rage within me! :) Anyway, full details are out 10am PDT. |

Yeah if the rumour's right the trackpad is oddball...
And good news for those of you who’ve been bitching about Apple’s laptops having a single button: the single-button trackpad is gone. Which is to say there is no button at all. The new trackpad is similar to the Air’s, in that it is bigger and supports additional multi-touch gestures. But unlike the Air’s, the MacBook Pro’s new trackpad is made of glass, and is a button itself. You just press and it clicks. This is not like the current software option where you can enable “Tap to Click” in the trackpad preferences, but instead a glass trackpad that acts as a physical button, with a click you can feel. Sounds odd, but I hear it’s very cool in practice.from daring fireball |

I used a laptop the other day that you couldn't tap the trackpad to do a mouse click (even my Dell supports that) and I found it really frustrating to have to use the buttons on the trackpad. I think its a pretty natural evolution for trackpads.
Also, haha at going from one mouse button to zero mouse buttons. |

Anyway, full details are out 10am PDT. How about we all just wait for that instead of wetting our pants over Apple-related rumours? last edited by parabol at 00:01:11 15/Oct/08 |

They manufacture shiny, expensive toys that fuel elitism in the IT/consumer sectors.
That's why. |

It's all up now. Not too bad - still would've liked the 13.3 unit to get a small footprint width-wise (I think the dream of a new 12" powerbook replacement is officially over).

Well, I think that's sorted: My replacement notebook in 12 months time won't be another MacBook Pro. Not unless they make a design change between now and then and go back to the old keyboard, those MacBook style keyboards are f***ing awful.

those MacBook style keyboards are f***ing awful.I think they're great to use - my apple wireless keyboard is easily my favourite. How it looks I'm not so sure about, but it's quite similar to the air which is sexy, so yeah. Nice! Just... where's the redesigned 17" :( hopefully they'll fix that up over the next couple years.. :P |

Prices have jumped significantly across the whole range.. That doesn't make me happy in the slightest.. I was looking for a mini to go about my daily stuffs and maybe turn it into a media box eventually.. Hurmm might have to hang onto my 12inch powerbook for a bit longer.
As for the design, seems they're on the path to combine the two lines of laptops which is also something i don't like.. Not a good showing from apple for me.. Don't think i'll be taking them up on their new range this time round. Now to figure out how to use windows again... (anyone got a hammer? :p) |

That 13 or 15" XPS is looking more and more like a better option/replacement.
Not sure how I'll go switching from OSX to Vista though. |

I'm sure it won't take you long to learn how to use the superior OS.

They've always been more expensive. full stop. But you get what you pay for with Macs these days.
Apple is all about things being consistent, design consistency, software working and working well straight out of the box. I'm certainly damn happy with my Mac mini with Leopard as my only PC now. The new MacBooks look pretty cool now btw. Also, their monitors are so expensive because they don't use 6-bit s***ty dithering LCD monitors; they use full 8-bit panels which are quite expensive. I don't know about the laptop screens but the cinema displays etc are all 8-bit panels. I used windows for years and years and never thought I'd buy a Mac ever but I certainly didn't flinch to spend even a little extra than a similar mini-PC to get my Mac mini because the thing works so much better than s***dows that you don't even regret spending a bit more on it. last edited by 3dee at 11:44:31 15/Oct/08 |

Well the new mac notebook is under $1000, they're in direct competition with Dell with that kind of price.
