Hey! Please read on! Im desperate for some assistance! I need to submit a video (specifically edited in Final Cut Pro) as an assessment for uni due next week. I finished filming on the weekend and went to uni this morning to start some minor editing. I could import the file into FCP, but the video playes as a white screen. The time stamp is there and is counting up accurately as the file plays. On the same mac I also tried to play the file in Quicktime, but the same thing is happening. It is recognising the file as an .AVI, but says its unable to play it. I have been reviewing and playing this file on my pc, works fine and is recognised as an AVI file in WMP, Nero Showtime and MP Classic. No problems. I was told to download MPEG Streamclip to my pc and try to convert the file to .DV before taking it back to uni. Ive tried encoding as both .DV and Quicktime .MOV using this program and neither have worked. The audio plays, but again the file plays as a white screen. Also, Im unable to actually download and install anything on the mac at uni, so thats not an option. It needs to be something I can do on my pc. If anyone can offer some help or suggestions Id be SO appreciative! Thanks for your help, GP |

First up I would try MediaCoder:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net It has a couple of 'extension' options that should spit out ipod-compatible files - do you need to have it as a certain resolution or can it be a small-ish sort of file? If so that'll prolly be the easiest option. Otherwise you can try fiddling with mediacoder options to see if it can spit out a QT-compatible .mov. I'm trying to convert an MPG now so I'll let you know how it goes. |

I know avid xpress does .dv files, you can get a trial version of that
but if you've already made .dv files, and they didn't work, then maybe something else is going on |

avi and quicktime are dumb containers, so.. remuxing to quicktime isn't going to help. FCP is ok with both. You need to either add codec support to the uni computer (Perian is a pretty good blanket codec fix - may not be allowed to install though..) or re-encode with a supported codec.
mpeg streamclip to dv should have been a safe bet, I've done this before for some lame jvc hdd files. if you can even re-encode your avi to dv, even if it's still in an avi container, that should be fine. |
