Skipper's 'split-second' decision simply not cricket

Elliott, who had made 24 off 28 balls, was left on the ground after what appeared to be an accidental shoulder charge by Sidebottom, going for the ball, following Kyle Mills's call for single.

The South Africa-born all-rounder was then run out after Ian Bell threw the ball to Kevin Pietersen at the bowler's end.

In a bit of cosmic justice New Zealand won after England gave away an overthrow on the last ball. Vittori was pissed after the game and wouldn't shake hands with Collingwood.

Skip to ~2mins in to see the replay (wtf did it take so long before we saw it?)

"Accidental shoulder charge" seems like a bit of a charged statement. It's almost as bad as saying "accidental tackle", implying that the bowler attacked him.

I dunno what the convention should be but the replays show the bowler in motion toward the ball before the batter started moving (at least thats what it looks like to me).

The commentators sure think England are in the wrong but I dunno, someone had to give way to avoid the collision and both players had pretty good reason to keep running in the direction they were.

Should have appealed and it was rightly given out.

This happened back in 1999, Australia vs Windies. Brendon Julian was bowling and collided with Sherwin Campbell. They ran him out and appealed and he was given out.

The crowd then rioted and he was brought back out to bat and Australia lost :P

Sounds like the best team won in both cases then.

Typical Australian cricket team attitude, appealing in these cases is just plain poor sportsmanship. At least Collingwood felt and expressed regret, I bet the Aussies didn't.

Well batsmen make the point of running at the ball when its on the pitch, so why should they be allowed to cry when something like this happens?

I'm with fpot; I'm all for sportsmanlyshiphood, but there was (imo) a completely accidental collision for which no blame can be laid and one team took advantage of it. If they hadn't done it it would have seriously disadvantaged them. NZ should take the victory and go about their business and practice more for next time we play them
