Somewhere around 700? I think, you have to buy it as the Metal gear solid pack since they are the next ones coming and apparently are half sold? If you believe them that is.

I've found in the past that Toys'r'Us has good stock levels, probably because no-one thinks to ever go there? A couple of their stores had dozens of copies of Guitar Hero when almost every other retailer was sold out a while back.

From their June 12 Catalog (Part 3):

That is tempting.
What is that assassins creed game like?

Does anywhere bargain down. Cause i know they only pay around 600 for the units.

I'm also looking to buy a ps3 shortly however i'm pretty keen for backwards compatability. I know that the 40gig don't do this but have read a few things around about the 80 gigs coming out.

Does anyone know about these and if they'll be backwards compat? Is there any other options at the moment in AU (other than buying a ps2) to play ps2 games on the ps3 or do you have to import? Anyone know if/when this is likely to change?

Yeah so you're pretty much looking at only getting them second hand or paying a fortune off of ebay and risking getting reamed.

should have got a 60gb when they came out u noobs :P

its pretty stupid that the 40gb isnt backwards compatible, guess it makes ppl who want to play ps2 games aswell buy the more expensive console tho.

Yeah scoobs i know :( didn't have the funds back then :P

I would pay extra for the back compat/60-80 gig but i don't think you can buy them anymore can you? Not new anyway.

Hmm seems like from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3#Retail_configurations

The only two in production atm are a 40 gig pal/ntsc and 80gig ntsc :(

How come they're so expensive? I bought one from Harvey Norman at the start of the year for 686 with a game and controller charger
