So it looks like Blu-Ray might win the war. Give it another year or two and you'd bet the winner would be finalised, right? And what then? Will the next gen supersede the current one as fast as DVD's replaced VHS?
I've started collecting my favorite movies, but now I am torn as to whether continue collecting or wait for the next gen and stick out with cruddy DIv X's...Though with decent oldies coming down to round the $10-$15 mark, its really hard to not buy them. Could this possibly be a ploy by the big guns to strip out as much cash as possible from the consumer before a huge rollout of next gen content? Paranoid, i know. The feds are after me as well. But i just cant help wondering... And how would they go about the transition? Just think of all those DVD's in JB atm. What'd be first? What'd be last? Will s***ty, yet personally sentimental no-name content from the 80's and 90's ever make it to HD? Well, if someone could answer all that I'd tip my e-hat. Regards. |

well do you have hardware that can play HD disks i.e. the player and the tv (and if you are going HD, the sound system).
Personally I don't think DVD is going anywhere for another year or two, I'd stick with DVD, I don't intend on buying a HD player until either format wins and there is one format. Once that happens I'll but which ever player and then start getting 'new' movies in HD, I'd imagine some of my personal favourite movies I'll end up rebuying as HD in the long run. In short, buy the DVD's (IMO) |

I don't think you'll be disapointed by the quality of DVD's in 5 years, especially for older movies.
Dvd's had alot of advantages over VHS. Mainly that they don't fade with time. the new HD formats will be great, for newer movies. |

Of course it's still worth buying DVDs. Why the hell would I pay $50 for a BD movie?

I reckon DVD's will be around for ages. There's so many movies out there that are perfect for DVD but would be a waste of money putting on blu ray because there would be no difference in quality.

Also, the majority of hi def players will play and upscale SD DVDs so they look a bit better anyway.
They'll never look as good as BD or HD-DVD, but atleast your current DVD collection wont be a total waste. |

I doubt you'll see the same conversion we had from VHS->DVD when the format war is won and there is a winner. The gains we got going from tape to DVD won't be matched by the gains going to HDDVD/Bluray so I can't see consumer market penetration being deep enough that the cost of the components will significantly drop (ie: to match $39 DVD players from Crazy Clarks) so it's affordable by all.

Yep agree with everyone else, I think there's still a lot of good reasons to buy regular DVDs - I suspect they'll be around for yeeeears given the huge customer install base of DVDs and the (relatively) high cost of upgrading to HD anyway.
I am the same, tempted to buy the $10-15 DVDs that I see lying around for old movies that I really like. I think if I ever did get HD, I wouldn't care about every movie I owned being in HD or not anyway. |

It depends on if you think the s*** they release these days is worth spending so much money on. TV is utter s*** and so are 99.999999999999999% of movies, so for me it is waste of cash. HD TV is a waste of time, I mean really who wants to see Richard Wilkins wrinkles.

I'm not sure about Richard Wilkins but when you see Jessica Alba swimming around in her bikini in Into The Blue then HD is instantly a winner in my books.

Topic: Is it still worth buying DVD's?You tell me...apart from some classics like Night At The Roxbury, Bad Taste or Office Space...do you really want to spend $30 on a movie like Schindlers List when you can spend $10 at Big W instead. |

And what then? Will the next gen supersede the current one as fast as DVD's replaced VHS? difference is you can't play a VHS cassette in any DVD player, where as you can play a DVD in any Bluray or HD DVD player. |

I would only spend money on Blu Ray and HD DVD on new movies which uses the 7.1 sound and the correct picture quality.. and would buy all other movies on normal DVD...
doesnt Blu-Ray DVD players play normal DVD anyway? also i am waiting for a all in one machine... i know LG makes one http://www.gadgetguy.com.au/reviews/151304/lg-bh100-home-theatre-blu-ray-and-hd-dvd-players |

That LG model is s***e. Look for the LG successor, or perhaps the Samsung BD-UP5000.

I've noticed that all the action movies I have considered buying for good sound and awesome picture are all the most expensive at the moment (even the old ones). I've had my PS3 for about 1 or 2 weeks and I haven't bought a single blu-ray title yet. |
