Just saw this on the Channel 9 news:
Premier Peter Beattie and his deputy Anna Bligh announced the Government has scrapped its controversial plans for a $10 million referendum on the issue, involving 18 councils. Recycled water still a no go I believe this is a good move. As it's clear that we need appropriate measures to deal with the water shortage and holding a referendum was going to take too long and waste too much money. Plus the $10 million is going to be added to the rebate system which will be a very good thing if more households and business become water wise. Of course, the Toowoomba nay-sayers aren't happy! They should just hack it, stop being selfish and therefore accept that it's the right move for everybody. |

Common sense prevails!!!
Toowoombians are absolute morons. With the choice of recycled water or no water, they chose no water. Bout time the government stopped pussying around fearing the wrath of uneducated voters and made a decision for the good of the people. |

Its explained in the article.
Its a go-go for SE QLD, but the other cities have decided not to commit to it yet. Edit: stupid headline still, the major story is the recycled water for QLD, not what NSW thinks about it ... |

I think its fantastic a decision is getting made and am a fan of beatie.
However I still believe desalination plants are the way to go. Desalt seawater, pump to dam, water gets treated as per normal, sell salt for moneys, once dam is full shut it/them down till needed again. They are costly to run however they will only be run till the dams are full. I don't believe they'll cost more to run/install than laying new pipework EVERYWHERE and the new treatment plants, pumps etc. Obviously tho there must be some reason I'm unaware of since this isn't the favored plan and hasn't even been spoken about. Anyone know the reason this is not the option to go for? |

pumping the brine from desalination plants back into the ocean can cause bad marine life damage if not done correctly More info/faq here http://www.abc.net.au/science/expert/realexpert/desalination/ |

pumping the brine from desalination plants back into the ocean can cause bad marine life damage if not done correctly Then why pump it back into the ocean? This is a problem we have everywhere, we just drain our waste into the river/ocean and forget about it as it flows away. (not taking a dig at you crusher) |

Brine just needs to be pumped out past the immediate coastline so that it doesn't get stuck by tidal motions, if I recall correctly. Easily solved.

IMO we should just pipe the recycled water into the dams and add it to the rest of the suply. If the uneducated f***wits of this state have a problem with it, they can either a)waste their money on buying bottled water (and whatever else ACA and TT are telling them to waste it on) or b)die.
Problem solved. |

It is interesting looking at: http://www.toowoombawater.com.au/recycled-water/faqs.html The multiple barrier approach means that we don’t rely on just one treatment process to keep the water safe – for example if the reverse osmosis plant somehow stopped working, the ultrafiltration, ultraviolet disinfection and advanced oxidation would between them remove all the things that might cause a danger to human health. If reverse osmosis fails, it is the only one in the system that removes hormones from doing some cursory research. Perhaps they could have used a better example considering this seems to be the most contentious issue regarding recycled waste water. They aren't all redundant, and I don't believe people doubt that current systems in place throughout the world don't remove pathogens. |

The water will probably improve with this treatment. I'm another who wont complain. Nobody would even know that recycled water is used except for all the media hype.

the problem with desalination is the huge amount of power required for it, what they said is for a desalination plant to do the work of the recycled water plant that they are hoping for, you would need 6 new coal power stations to provide the power.
so i say, go to desalination, and to nuclear! |

Surely if you're REALLY concerned about the quality of your water, you can 1) run your own filtration system and 2) boil your water before you drink it

what is funny is that people don't realise that all water is already recycled.
they think that after it gets flushed down the drain that it never gets used again. water is a finite resource, if it gets recycled naturally or gets recycled by man what is the difference? |

the NSW govt are easily worst state government in Australia. - our public transport is horrible. - our schools and hospitals are under staffed. - we are running out of water. - they won't release more land for housing - they sell the state out to private companies to get road infrastructure built. - they break contracts with private companies opening the state up for massive law suits. - they merged Sydney and South Sydney councils to try and gain control of Sydney planning rights. - when they lost the election for the new bigger Sydney Council they legislated so could they over rule Sydney Council to appease their developer buddies. if they win the next election i will seriously be considering moving interstate. |

"Damn this water tastes like s***"....couldn't help that one.
Water is water....freedom of choice means that you either drink it, move, buy bottled water....OR DIE (or a combination of the above). Either way you look at it, we are plagued with wild weather, pollution, global warming, rising seas......why not treated crap. Some people will say NO to recycled crap, then pour money into goods and services that will help destroy the planet....or themselves....Go Figure Also, I have seen enough kids pull the odd nugget out of their nappy and shove it into their mouth to know that there must be something to it....hahaha. Seriously though....the safest alternative is BEER....or Rum and Coke for ME! |

I know that there is more water going down our 'sewage' pipes than just toilet. I am sure toilet waste is something like 10% of it.
But yeah, let's focus on the poos and wees of this world rather than gutter run off and grey water |
