The America's Army team have announced that their free shooter has hit 8 million registered users:
America's Army registered players have logged over 3 billion player rounds and nearly 200 million player hours. Over 1,100 fan sites have registered to be listed on the game community website. From the United States to New Zealand, Greenland to Singapore, Latvia to Chile, 38 different countries around the world host almost 1,200 Honor servers. These honor servers track honor points that form the basis of America's Army unique scoring and rewards system.
If you haven't checked it out yet, grab the massive 2.8gb download locally from AusGamers and fire it up. It's a little more hardcore than your average Counter-Strike clone and offers an interesting gameplay experience - and it's free.

This only means 8 million have downloaded it and checked it out, and then stopped playing after realising it was poo.

There's probably only a few thousand playing at any time

That's nothing compared to the 8 BILLION that play/played WoW (apparently nearing 8 triliion after the release of BC).

I registered an AA account years ago and never actually played it online =(

It's actually pretty cool but has a steep "learning curve" because of the training. It's not so much a learning curve as just a delay before you can really get into the game. I think it's cool, it filters out newbs and uncos fairly effectively.

It suuuure does. That is the bonus about the game. Most retards won't stay around long enough to figure out how to play.

And even if there was, I know, like, at least a couple of people who don't even own a computer, so that would bring the count down further.
