Are you the kind of person who has to touch the hot plate to find out if it is hot, or does someone saying "watch out it is hot" do it for you?

Do you have to experience something before you will believe it? Or can you simply understand that someone else who knows better says to stay away?

yeah I agree with eK, fiddy/fiddy

I like to try out new experiences but if somebody older and wiser warned me against it I'd listen.

Emo you say? sounds more like a Common Sense question.

I use common sense myself. And for the unexplained, i form an opinion through research, what others say, and logic.

So Kat, did you know having unprotected sex would cause kids or did you have to experience it to find out?? (joke. was wide open for it.)

50/50 depends if its a subject i have existing knowledge on.

if I have no idea about the subject i'll take the word of someone else - if I feel I disagree based on my own knowledge I'll test the waters.

if someone says 'that hotplate is hot don't touch it' I wouldn't - but not because of what they said, but because I know that hotplates tend to be hot.

if someone said, don't touch that volcanic rock because it will burn your hand I wouldn't because I have no idea about volcanic rocks.

however if someone said don't dive into that river because there is a rock under the surface and I'd been swimming in that river several times before, I would base my decision on my own experience rather than what they told me.

meh.

Dangerous things like getting hit by cars will hurt I'll believe. Other things like that thing feels like play-doh or that mouse is heavier than that other one, I'll usually check it out, probably due to curiosity more than anything else.

Level with us Kat, the hot plate scenario is just a euphemism for something else.

Of course, you're expecting to be asked this, so i fully anticipate a detailed emo story, ending with the lesson "sometimes i do stupid s*** and get hurt" being leaned, and we benefit from (yet another) insight into your mysterious emo character.

Awesome

Well if I had never touched the hot plate before and never did and only took the advice of someone else I may have got through without being burnt, however I would never understand WHY not to touch it. I could be told, because it burns. Then I would wonder what is this burns?
Sometimes you have to be burnt in order to understand..

"Tell a man there are a billion stars in the galaxy and he will believe you.
Tell a man the seat has wet paint on it and he has to touch it".

I believe only what evidence shows me there is no reason to reject the null hypothesis. I'm not going to believe the sky is pink just on your say-so, but I'm not going to touch a hot plate just to find out if you're right or not.

Life is pretty boring if you dont do nothing, however I would judge each scenario, like for example I wouldnt want to get some chick pregant at 18 years to see what its like to waste my young days.

Actually no... I am that stubborn and stupid that I would touch it and have on many occasions :D

I am one of those frustrating people that you try and warn time and time again, but I won't listen until I have experienced myself...... really pisses my loved ones off

So shoudlnt the question be:

If you came to the understanding that the hot plate burt upon touching, would you still continue to touch it hopeing that it wont burn this time?

50/50, just depends on what it is. Sometimes in woodwork at school I wanna put my hand on the table saw or table router to see if it would hurt....

tell me to stay away I'm more likely to go do it. Depends what it is. If someone says a gun is loaded and if I point it at my head & pull the trigger I'll die, I'm obviously not going to try it (sorry nF).

Generally I have to experience something before believing it. Obviously it doesn't stretch to all things, like if someone said "Dont eat that, it will kill you", odds are good I wouldn't eat it to find out if they were telling the truth. But if someone tells me "God is real" or "Ghosts are real" or "The new Nintendo Revolution controller isn't just a ridiculous looking gimmick" I wouldn't believe it without experiencing some proof first-hand for myself.

As far as everything I've read uni wise its primarily a developmental thing. It all really stems from childhood.

It is in a childrens nature to touch sharp objects, lick dirty surfaces etc until they're told not to or they can associate a given feeling with the proper reaction then learning for themselves that its bad to do certain things.. Eg sharp object would create a pain reaction. Pain is a bad feeling to experience.

Depending on how you are positioned developmentally speaking you'll be able to interpret the correct way to react in a given number of situations therefore learning for yourself that it is indeed a bad thing to touch a hotplate if its 'hot' but again that all stems from your childhood and how much your parents may or may not have guided you through

If you find yourself continually doing things like touching hot plates then you're just simply gathering evidence to create a proper reaction say for the next time you're presented with a similar situation, developing the right response for a given stimulus and so on. Some people take longer then others to develop that ability to associate but thats attached to a whole host of childhood type things aswell..

Ha, i almost typed some really emo s*** here. Lucky i changed my mind or i would have been very embarrassed.

Basically, 50/50 depends on the situation. Sometimes you just feel like saying 'f*** the consequences!.'

When I was younger I was a daredevil, now I'm paranoid freak who takes 0 risks.

So I guess I learnt never to take risks and live a boring predictable life. But I don't make any mistakes, except the mistake of not to take risks at all. lolz OOHH how profound life is.

'can't say I'd touch the hotplate, but I did used to have a thing for bridgejumping as a kid :P

gaming related - I'd never take someone else's opinion on something onboard without checking out the software for myself. most people seemed to like CS and the Sims for some reason :/
