Konami have released a nine minute long trailer from the Tokyo Game Show showcasing the next Metal Gear Solid title. The trailer is only available for streaming, so you'll have to cop the usual sort of streaming quality that you've come to know and love. It is a pretty impressive trailer though, showing of some of the lush visuals we can expect to see on the PlayStation 3.

Yay another movie game!!!
I remember watching Operator play Metal Gear Solid 2 and this one section of the game he played 3, 5 minute long sections only to have them intersected by 10-15 minute cutscenes... and they weren't even a lead up to a boss battle or anything!!!

Still a good sneaking game but damn long winded.

Was indeed sexy ... but drawn out and long winded with nothing happening yet again...

Is this the same trailer that has no gameplay, just a pre-rendered scene of Snake sneaking around?

The jury is still out on whether it's pre-rendered or not, statements have been made but no worthy proof. Even if it is real-time, I still have my doubts on exactly how close to an end-spec consumer ps3 whatever machine it was running on is. If Sony can really push those kind of polys and textures out with that much stuff happening in the scene and keep 60fps, ill be very impressed.

I'm just happy they are making a continuation on from MGS2.

MGS2 was my favourite. I sat there and took the story in something shocking... it's one of the few games I actually cared enough to listen to everything and take it in.

And now it has a real continuation YAY!

I recently installed MGS and MGS2 Substance on the PC. (I don't have MGS3, will be getting a ps2 and it soon, hopefully it will come out on PC maybe.... PS2 pad on PC with updated textures and higher res for the win!).

Fanboy ahoy!

I hardly care what the graphics are about, as long as it's more kick ass Snake action!

I was very slow to get excited about the PS3 but hopefully these games will sway me ^_^

some info for yas

After Kojima finished off his technical demonstration, Kojima explained why he decided to age his characters. "Old characters are better because their wrinkles can be used to show the rendering capabilities of the PS3," he said. "Young characters have silky skin, so it's not as challenging".

Interestingly, Kojima said he doesn't want to give MGS4 a totally realistic look. "With the shift to high definition [resolution], we can give a very realistic look to the game, like an actual movie," he said. "But we purposely added filtering to give it the look that makes it Metal Gear Solid." He then showed how he can change the color balance, glare, and add other effects in real-time through the PS3 devkit debug menu.

Series designer Shinkawa revealed that one of the new features in MGS4 will be a modular weapon system. "As you could see in the trailer, MGS4 allows different weapons attachments to be swapped in and out. We made it so players can customize [their weapons]," said Shinkawa. "This is going to be a game for equipment lovers. We've paid special attention to the metals used in the weapons so that they have different textures. They're all metal, but their colors and other elements will slightly vary."

Given the shift to the PS3, the soldiers in MGS4 have new characteristics as well. Unlike soldiers from past installments, the soldiers in MGS4 will have individual appearances, including individualized clothing. Kojima referred to them as "Mr. Solider" rather than enemies, since they are neutral towards Snake unless he attacks them. "There are no friendly soldiers or enemy soldiers this time," he said. "It's a war zone, so whether they'll become allies or foes is all up to the player."

I overclocked my eyes, so I can see up to 120fps

I've had a theory for a while that although we are only able to see up to 24 frames per second that we can catch the starts and ends of frames just above 24 being renedered on a monitor and therefore it can seem jerky even at 30ish frames sometimes.

I have no scientific proof for this but i can just "see" slight jerkyness sometimes in 30ish frames for some reason.

It quickly becomes smooth above 40-50 for me though.

Read the thread - there's a quote that shows that they brought up a debug menu and changed settings around to prove that it was real time.

it was still just a stupid cutscene, no matter whether or not it was actually rendered in real time (which i doubt)
what the f***. Thats as stupid as saying the eye can only see 30FPS... Whether the game is showing gameplay or a scripted sequence has NOTHING to do with whether its pre-rendered or real time. If its scripted it still relies on alot of the game mechanics to run it. AI and possibly physics aside. Graphically, its the same.
