Pretty cool. How long have you had them? I've wanted to get turtles for a while but they're hella expensive.

they're about 10 months old. If you have a license ( which you need to buy them anywhere legit ) you can get them from Lone Pine @ $40 ea or so ... the money goes into their turtle breeding programs ... heaps cheaper than the $100+ at a pet store.

What's involved in getting a license? I know you have to contact some department and keep a log-book... Is there much more to it then that? |

Get in contact with the EPA - Environmental Protection Agency.. They'll issue you with a turtle permit.

Stinky how do turtles react to stuff put in the tank, plants, logs, ornamental fish ect?
If you turned the tank into a bit of a forest or put nice grasses on the bottom would they just eat it or dig it up foraging? Are they aggressive towards other tank life if you keep them well fed? last edited by StopShootingMe at 21:34:19 14/Sep/05 |

Actually, last two turtles I had were obliterated by the massive Red Devil I had at the time. I figured they were able to get out of the water and away from him so it shouldn't be a prob
He swam around an around trying to get et em out on their nice lil log until he somehow decided that if he sunk it, he could then stop them getting away from him.. I still remember him circling the log that morning thinking "wtf is up with this fish?" and not worrying about it anymore because I thought they'd be safe an could get away from him. Anyway, by the time I got home from work that evening he'd dug the extra bit of gravel out from around the base of the log which then sunk the log below water level where he then proceeded to tear all the legs (and it's head) off one before wedging the other in so tight against the log before covering it in gravel it suffocated :( |

They're pretty aggressive, but I'm told you can keep them with fish if the fish are big enough to brush them off ( guy i spoke to had kept them with large barra / saratoga ). Any plants they destroy pretty quick.
Usually you don't need to worry about them being a target for your fish ( unless you have super aggressive fish ... Hermi ). |

Yeah, I was certainly surprised. Imagine how I had to explain it to my (then) fiance (didn't get married fortunately) at the time that my uber fish executed a brilliant tactical plan and obliterated here worthless mutant turtles..
Yeah, it came out wrong when I told her that time as well |

do a google for tiger pistol shrimp. they shoot a pulse of water, underwater that can kill and stun little things upto two meters away with this weird claw. apparently it reaches temperatures upto a million degrees at the point. amazing stuff :D.

err, dude, that things not fresh water (it's Salt Water) and is more commonly known as a Mantis Shrimp You DON'T have them in your tank as there is a very real chance that they will crack the glass. A mate bought some live rock one day and I was helping him position stuff in his tank when I got this god almighty WACK from a hammer on the inside of my finger. I shat myself thinking "WTF, something just bit me in a salt water tank out of a rock!!" When I looked closer to try an see what had possibly killed me (the whole thought of being bitten by something in a rock thats in salt water is pretty f***ing scary) and calmly freaking out about it I noticed it was a small Mantiss Shrimp. It died soon after in my fresh water tank =) |
