looking for opinions atm...

the old Koss UR-30's are packing it in, and I'm looking to trade up.

any recommendations under the $500 mark would make for interesting research. Preferring locally available (Bris/Syd/Mel) options

I have always stuck with Koss cans... They have a lifetime warenty on them and even when the fabric has worn away on it they still fix it free of charge.

koopz - try the Sennheiser HD-25's - good bass response, range etc and also good for reducing background noise - if you do go for Sennheiser, don't go to JB HiFi, try drumworkx(sp?) in the valley - much cheaper. I didn't learn this until after I bought mine ($425) a couple of years ago

If you want, you can have a crack at mine an see what you think in a live gaming environment as opposed to some audibly sterile shop =)

I have been considering a pair of Audio Technica AD700's to replace my Phillips HP840's
Headphonic has them listed at $229.00

A $500 pair of headphones would f***ing own.

I would much rather a $500 pair of headphones that $500 worth of speakers etc

i got a $100 pair and there pretty good, i dont really use them as much since i hooked my stereo up to my comptuer tho.

Until headphones make my room shake, I'll stay with speakers :).

But since you want headphones, I've heard nothing but good things about Sennheiser's stuff.

I agree with Ravnos on this one. Spend $100 to $150 tops and still have heaps left for a decent vid card to play BF2 on :P

vote no.2 for the DT770 pro's. needs an amp to pump the serious bass though.

Those Altec headphones are utter dogs*** - how can you possibly say they are good???

They heaps better than my $5 specials I used to use!

Besides, I've listened to $100-$500 ones my mates use, and I don't hear 100's of dollar difference for me.

Ive got a pair of akg 141studios, bout $200 now though retailed for $350 when I picked them up, had them for over a year now and not one problem with them.

Ignore the stuff on the headphonic website about them being "dark", theyre studio/monitor headphones (they actually won some billboard award for being the most used headphones in recording studios across America, which is a pretty good indication of their quality to me, I will try to dig the article up) which means they are not meant to provide an "EXTRA REFLEX X HYPER BASS BOOST SYSTEM" (Im trademarking that by the way) or any of that crap, but rather to produce the exact same sound thats coming out of the studio monitors in your headphones, and not boosting certain signals which other headphones may do (which you could do anyway via the eq)

I do heaps of gaming with them too (via audigy 2 zs) and the sound is still superb :)

Sound is so clear for such a "relatively" in-expensive pair of headphones, i luv em :)

Anyone else go AKG's? Always wondered what they are like (always used Koss personally).

If you can't hear the difference between those Altec Lansing phones and $100 ones, your mate must have been severely ripped off or you're deaf.

No I said I couldn't hear a big enough difference to justify the additional cost for the limited use I get from using them, as I have decent speakers.
