his new album is actually his old one.

There was a bootleg that came out a few months before "College Dropout" that was basically an unfinished and unpolished version of "Freshman Adjustment".

Theyre both pretty damn awesome, just slightly different styles and production levels.

OK so you want hardcore and new...

Not really sure what you mean by hardcore. I mean, the term can be applied to some hip hop, but it is thrown around a bit loosely these days. I take hardcore, as far as hip hop goes, to mean the style of hip hop that is non-mainstream and does not contain r'n'b overtones. In other words it would incorporate 'real' or pure hip hop ie. no half-stepping crossover s***.

Having said that the newer albums (last 12 or so months) that fit this description would be things like People Under the Stairs, Lyrics Born, Edan, Nas etc.

All that new 'crunk' music, and Ludacris, Fabulous, Benzino, Jay-Z, s*** isn't really my thing. If you really want to get into some new s***, go to Butter Beats or Rocking Horse records and flip through the new vinyl. That's where it's at.

But if you want a bit of a list of cool s*** to check out in the meantime, old new and in between here it is:

Latyrx, Common, Digital Underground, Ice T, NWA (Ice Cube, Dr Dre, MC Ren, Eazy-E) Geto Boys (Willie D, Scarface, Bushwick Bill, Big Mike) 5th Ward Boys, K Solo, Busy B, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel, Afrika Bambataa, BDP (KRS_1), Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, Original Concept, Treacherous 3, Juice Crew All Stars, LL Cool J, Black Sheep, Schooly D, A Tribe Called Quest, Blackalicious, Company Flow, Wu-Tang + solo albums, Hieroglyphics, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Public Enemy, Paris, Professor Griff, Notorious BIG, Tupac, 2 Live Crew, Tuff Crew, UTFO, Whodini, Above the Law, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B and Rakim, Jurassic 5, Fat Boys, Kokane, Kool Keith, Ultramagnetic MC's, Lord Finesse, mobb Deep, Rahzel, De La Soul, Pharcyde, Cypress Hill, Gangstarr, Special Ed, Poor Righteous Teachers, King Tee, Rob Base and DJ EZ-Rock, Jungle Brothers, UGK, Brand Nubian, Too Short, Ant Banks, the list goes on..

If you need more info ie. which albums are the better ones etc gimme a yell. But seriously, if you haven't checked out any or all of the above i would urge you to give em a listen. A lot of different styles there, but I like em all.

Kool Keith, Ultramagnetic MC's

Nah I remembered them. Well I figured Dr Octagon/Analogue Brothers is Kool Keith, but yeah he does rawk in those incarnations too.

I have Dr Octagon, Black Elvis/Lost in Space and the album with Keith holding the rat burger on the cover (name escapes me atm) by KK and Ultramags on vinyl.

Yes Kool Keith is one crazy cat. He is pretty out there in terms of his lyrics/delivery sometimes, but somehow it seems to work.

Blue Flowers, I Run Rap, Supergalactic Lover and Waiting List (DJ Shadow/Automator Mix) are some of his cool tracks, but how can you really pick from such a great back catalogue.

Ultramags are some of my fav old school s***

Yeah I listed the members from NWA and Geto Boys who have had solo albums :)

But I totally agree, Ice Cube has probably made the most consistently great hip hop albums of all time. I was just listening to Death Certificate today and that album is one of his best I reckon.

And yes, I did forget ICP. Great Milenko and Jeckel Bros. f*** yeh.

Yeh Tanaka I had Great Milenko on high rotation there for a while. And the Jeckel Brothers has some killer tracks on it too. I wondered if they'd make any more albums after they finished their 6 albums in the Dark Carnival series.

Now tell me this...the Mike Clark from ICP...that isn't the same Mike Clark
that plays in Suiciadal Tendencies is it?
Their earlier stuff isn't as good IMO, but that's probably more to do with the money spent on production. I wouldn't mind checking out their new one though.

And yeh Naughty By Nature..that's one I forgot.

Unsure about Mike Clark issue, but as for their albums, after Shangri-La the 6th Jokers card, they released Hell's Pit which they also claim to be the 6th Card, but making it the 7th.The just released "The Calm",the 8 track cd i mentioned earlier, and in 2006 they are releasing "The Tempest" which by all accounts, should be a full album release.
Apart from the "Jokers Card" series, they also released another 3 cd's-
*Insane Clown Posse Mutilation Mix-Greatest Hits (That Never Were Hits)
*Tunnel of Love
*Bizzar
Not to mention Dark Lotus, the group they formed with Twiztid.
As you can tell i am a fan =)

oh yeah that dude is totally awesome.

if you like mc chris check out www.frontalot.com for MC FRONTALOT. his starwars song is Yellow Laser Beam and it totally makes me chortle.

lyrics are as follows
met her at the star wars convention
did I mention, she was looking for love?
had to call her bluff, lady you don't mean how that sounded
(the thousand-pound dude in the 'no fat chicks' shirt's astounded)
thought she'd take it back, revoke, rescind, rewind, retract
ya heard me, she said, I want any man here
to descend in the cave where you conquer the fear
and I'll steer you to side of the force that you choose
somebody's man enough here -- now who?
This girl, now you have to understand,
would not look out of place on the arm of an attractive man
so the geeks in attendance got jaws on the floor, one extends his
saber but he tripped on his cloak, I stepped to the front then I spoke
I ain't spitting game, look I got a wookie hat on,
but these guys here are used to gettin' spat on
by girls, see you put em in shock.
And this ain't the right con to quote mister spock
but it's highly illogical to me. Girl looked in my eye, said is your mind free?

Cause I got something for you
it is shiny, it is clean
Come on up and I'll adore you
with my yellow laser beam

sitting in her room upstairs,
watching her wind up the buns in her hair
I declare that I'd like to be luke,
unless that's a little bit too perverted for you
I could be jaba, a jawa, an ewok, when we talk "oo ga la gee bla!"
wait -- I seen all the flicks, all the books that I read,
don't remember any character tied to the bed
but that's all right, I'ma just pretend that I'm encased in carbonite
and why that's a nice gold bikini, you make that?
shows off what you got, make no mistake that's
one fine view of chewbacca you're giving me
lower that down here, we could be living the
linguistic lifesyle of the protocol droid.
(Here comes the part where I'm not overjoyed)
Fire! She said, and before I could scream
got a steaming mouth full of yellow laser beam

Fabulous and Jay-Z crunk? f*** no. Fab is borderline and Jay-Z is Jay-Z.

Crunk == Lil Jon, Yin-Yang Twins and Ludacris to a lesser extent

Yeh you're right Jay-Z isn't crunk, was just lumping him in with "new" artists.
He's actually got some ok tracks, but I just prefer other stuff.

I gotta say though Linkin Park is a band I just don't like at all. Sports metal crossover bands like LP and Korn are kinda boring to me. Probably good for teenagers with angst and such, they get old really quickly. I simply find their approach to music making shallow and they are unlistenable after one or two songs. The only good crossover rock/metal-rap hybrid is and will only ever be, Run DMC and Aerosmith "Walk This Way"...end of story.

Ice Cube is probably one of the greatest rappers ever, however Dr. Dre is by far the most talented member from N.W.A., from a production point of view. Dr. Dre would have to be the most successful Producer in any genre.

50 cent is the only black rapper I listen to nowadays. I like eminem's old s***, but his newest album was childish and frankly an embarresment. D12 world had some good tracks. For a futuristic head trip, Non Phixion. Get futurama and drug music, you'll see what I mean.

Eminem hasn't got the raw appeal he used to have. Too much money destorys any rappers credability. 50 won't be far behind. You can't rap about struggling and gangbanging when u live in a 10million dollar house.

Agreed.

I prefer Dre over any of the other members. His style is so smooth, production immaculate and his delivery is always spot on. You can crank it up and it never sounds 'noisy' just phat :)

Ice Cube is also one of the best. However he lacks the refinement of Dre. Not that that is a negative quality just a different style and sound.

Eazy E? Well he's Eazy E - pushin up daisy's, with something like 10 kids cruising around and some disappointed hoes. He was really the hanger-arounder, never really had much to contribute. Except the cussing.

Yeah, Eazy-E was great when Ice Cube was writing his rhymes and Dre was producing.

His solo albums while feuding with Dre are pretty forgettable. Eazy-E was pretty much a novelty rapper for NWA, in much the same way as Flavor Flav was a sidekick to Chuck D's awesome delivery and perfect tone.

As much as these two rappers added something to the groups they belonged to, they certainly weren't really MC's in their own right.

Although I agree that Dre is the greatest producer who ever lived, I prefer the les smooth but more expressive rapping of Ice Cube. Two totally different styles, so you can't really compare, but I think Cube has gone outside the bitches, blunts and guns mentality and as such has a wider range of subject and vocabulary. I agree about the production, no question about that.

Another one I forgot (I'm sure there are heaps) is The D.O.C, who was originally involved with Dre and NWA.
His solo album, No One Can Do It Better is like another funkier NWA album. Dre produces, and all the crew appear on tracks throughout, but perhaps the best is the posse cut that closes the album, The Grand Finale.

The D.O.C unfortunately had his career cut short when his vocal chords were severed/damaged in a car accident. I have a feeling he may have had something to do with EFIL4ZAGGIN, but I haven't heard anything for a long time.

Still, if you haven't already heard or own this album, and you like Dre etc, get it.

Disappointment impossible.

Oh yeh, and Jeru the Damaja. And Black Star. And Mos Def. And Taleb Kwali.
Oh and I know it's not rap, but Mixmaster Mike's latest album is also highly recommended.
