The first version of Nexuiz, a free, open source game built on a modified version of the Quake engine, has been released:
After many years of development, Nexuiz has been released to the public! Nexuiz is a fast-paced, chaotic, and intense multiplayer first person shooter, focused on providing basic, old style deathmatch. The 1.0 release weighs in at 161MB, and includes 17 maps, 28 playable characters, and 10 music tracks. It is cross-platform, and supports Windows and Linux (x86 and x86_64), with Mac support coming soon (patch to be released in the next few days).

All of Nexuiz is licensed under the GPL, including the core engine, the textures, maps, sounds, and models. It is extremely modder friendly. Because of its GPL license status, it can be included in any Linux distros or packages and is entirely free.
You can download it here. There is a server up on GameArena.

Update: A new version has been released, taking it to version 1.1.

HOLY f*** DAVE! This thing is insain. We need an internet server stat dude...

Was just playing with 6 workmates and its like quake1 but with all the jibletts of quake2 and with all the nice weapons of quake3 and the graphics or a not dark doom3.

Internet server FTW!! Open source FTW!! Linux support FTW!! Dedicated server FTW!! Bots FTW!!

I can see Q1 community sucking this up. Why have we not heard about it before?

Ummm, it laggs my system way too much. I can run full screen Anti Aliasing 1024 x 756 for HL2 but this thing laggs???? WTF.

Drop down to 800x600 and it runs much better. Don't expect huge optimisations or uber-awesomeness. They don't exactly have the budget that Valve has to really polish up the game like that.

This is f***ing cool:

I tweaked the cfg file. Runs smooth as now at 1024 x 768. I turned off the real time shadow stuff for now.

Fun playing with the rocket jumping and air movement.

shrapse, yeah it's fun but it needs a lot of weapons balance. I think I'd like to just play Quake though, I miss how straight forward that game was. Can we get a GL engine version of that up?

ET there is heeps of quake GL engines out there.. one even has dynamic range lighting and a huge particle engine but the point is they all suck because there was no effort put into balancing both programming aspects and gameplay aspects.

HL2 runs on amazingly low specs for what it is. I'd call it polished.

Dude, your kid spawned after the release of Quake, and he can recognise the Quake engine?

Respect.
