This just in from the front lines…Battlefield 2 has officially gone GOLD! The game will begin shipping under the EA GAMES brand starting Tuesday, June 21, 2005.

In Battlefield 2, players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers: the United States, China, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, players can take control of any of the game’s 30+ vehicles. Players can also hone their skills against improved enemy intelligence in the new single-player campaign before competing online with up to 64 players in some of the most intense battles on the PC.

Enhanced team play features allow players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With the new online character ranking and persistence, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals, and more.

Shamelessly stolen from Blue's News.

Not long now chaps, I'd say a demo will be out fairly soon hopefully. promoted forum item

With EA games this usually means its 2-4 weeks from the date they'd planned to ship, but I'm hopeful in this case it might mean its actually ready to be released. I guess we'll see in a couple weeks!

Forgive my stupidity, but how do these games go gold before their released?
Don't they have to sell so many first?

When a game goes Gold it means that the final build of the game is finished and a Master CD is made, these are usually made of a gold alloy (or at least was). The Master CD will be used to create a bunch of production CD's that are used to make all the CD's that are in the box's, the Master CD can be used for that as well, sorta depends on how the game is Distributed.

gold means, gold master (final) cd has created and shipped to mass production place.

ie. game finished being made, now shipping.

Official order of things to do when BF2 comes out:

1. Install game
2. Find a way to remove the 35 intro logos (including "EA Games, Challenge Everything")
3. Play game

If it takes 60 seconds to start and get into the menu, I'm not going to be happy >:(

A post to the BF dedicated server list indicates that the demo may be exclusive to one of the big US sites (GameSpot is mentioned but they rarely do true 'exclusives' - they usually do 'premieres', which means the demo just launches on their site first, but everyone else is free to mirror it). We've asked EA for confirmation, hopefully will find out one way or the other by tomorrow. I can't think of any other demos that EA have done an exclusive on (they usually launch stuff on their own sites/FTPs) but maybe my memory just sucks.

Needless to say, if this is true looks like everyone will be battling for bandwidth without the usual swag of mirrors available. Its sad that game publishers still haven't realised that (Internet > one game site), but I guess these sites throw all sorts of other stuff at them, like heaps of free advertising and stuff.

Distribution of large files is what torrents were made for!

Vote for the demo to be torrented today! ;)

No doubt ausgamers will have it up on torrent, will wait till then if I don't buy it first ;)
That would f***ing suck and its totally NOT what torrents are for. The reason everyone hates the blizzard downloader for wow patches is that, aside from it being a s***ty client, there are so many f***ing people all trying to get the file at once that you get s*** download speeds.

Files like this should ALWAYS be FTP so that its a stable and fast download.

The only exception is if they put a bunch of clients on fast connections onto the torrent... but hardly anyone does that.

theres only been 4 seasons of a bf42 ladder on gamearena...not *that* competitive

/end sarcasm

oh and s3 had about 30-35 teams through the season, and only now with s4 have numbers started dwindling, and so the finals are getting played out hopefully before a bf2 demo (cause god knows what ill play if the demo comes out and we are still in finals >.<)

Heh, what? When a new demo comes out and I have to mirror it, I always get better speeds from a torrent than I would from an HTTP/FTP download. Always. The first place I go to look for stuff is filerush.com, because I'll get between 300-1000kb/s downloads from them. I've got a paid account on a number of other services and the most I get from them is 200-300k.

Do we know when it will be available in Australia, has EA Australia said anything?
Current scheduled release date is up here (release dates on GA are based on the official dates announced by publishers). This date has been constant for a few weeks (at least, prolly months) and EA are usually good at sticking to dates.

So... how do you explain how I get fast speeds almost every time?

In my experience, just about every torrent I download is fast. I guess probably because i'm downloading legitimate torrents as opposed to the dodgy ones people are hosting from thier home DSL

If you were getting on the day after the torrent came out there were probably alot of seeds. Otherwise, like I said, as long as the server puts a number of clients on with strong upload speeds, like ftp server quality connects, then the torrent will work. But if it just has one client uploading then youll get the bottlenecking still.

You are talking about a major release for a demo that's going to be in huge demand, of course torrenting it is going to be the best way to distribute it, and restricting it to some download site's poor little pipe is going to hinder everyone from getting it in reasonable time.

We see it all the time with these 'exclusive' demo releases. It's bulls***.

If you are having difficulty getting decent speeds on your torrents, focus on only a couple of torrents at a time (one if it is important to you), and ensure you do the right thing in giving back what you've taken.

this from Internode games :

http://games.internode.on.net/

Many of you have been waiting for this news, and there's been quite a few hints dropped. Well we've now had permission to announce that the Internode Games Network will indeed be providing "Official Trusted Server" support for Battlefield 2 on launch.

We will be hosting over 500 player spots combined across both of our network locations. This will be a combination of 32 and 64 player servers, and your stats will count towards your global ranking Wink

MM so nice... Hanging for this to come out.. Apparently the demo is a week off and will supply time limited online with 1 map.. so use that to test out how fast it will run on your video cards.

If 20ms is what it takes for you to die to another person, it wasn't the 20ms differnce that did it (well maybe for 5% or so of the time, if that) change your style of play so that a 100ms differnce dosnt mater, ie play smarter. How else do Modem players compeate with lpb's? (and yes they can, methz anyone..)

If your ping to a Sydney or Melbourne server is greater then 20ms then maybe your ISP isnt all that great :/

Sif play on gayarena, then again interchode aint any better ..lol

Sif bag gameareana. Name ANY OTHER SERVICE that matches gamearena in servers, quality, quantity, AND responsiveness to patcches, updates, and the like... for free as well.

Also if your so whiney about QLD servers, why not fund, or find a way to fund your own? After all, QLD is ment to be the 'Smart State'.
I'm sure that if you GIVE Ausgamers ongoing $$$'s to fund a QLD server they would gladly do it for you. You could even call it the Oz server if you wanted.

I pre-ordered this game a while ago from Gameswarhouse. Seems it comes with some free headphones as well. Bargain! :P

Just saw this over at VE. EA have put out some info on the ranked servers intenion for the 'serious' gamers.

Ranked servers will be where the hardcore bump heads and clash knives. All Ranked Servers will be configured to provide the definitive competitive Battlefield experience. Friendly Fire is on, and TK will be punished by default, so all players will need to use their tools wisely and watch out for the tools that have been deployed by their teammates. If, for example, you have a hankering to be the best sniper to ever stare down the sights of an SVD in Battlefield 2, these are the servers on which you will have to walk the walk. If you'd rather not spend your time trying to figure out where the world's #1 sniper is popping your melon from, see below.

Ranked servers will be heavily administrated and have Punkbuster on. The integrity of the stats system is of paramount importance to EA (and of course to those participating in it) and so we will be monitoring things constantly. At the end of the day, Ranked servers will be a safe, regulated environment on which the most competitive players will be spending their time. If this environment doesn't sound right for you, that's great. That's what Unranked servers are for.

Sounds good to me.

How is the QGL(forums?) based team for BF2 looking?
Strex? able to shed any light on this?

There will be ladders run with different size teams, so what might be the go.
Smaller team like 8 ppl?
or larger with 12-16?
or maybe both

Another nice write up about BF2 impressions over at GameSpot

Put it all together, and it's no exaggeration to say that Battlefield 2 simply looks fabulous at this point, and that's going to make the wait for the game to ship later this month even worse. However, after a few hours of playing time, it's hard not to be excited at the prospect of a summer full of Battlefield 2. This preview just covers our initial impressions of the game, and we're going to need a lot more time with the final version of the game before we can come in with a verdict. But it's safe to say at this point that this is definitely going to be one of the biggest games on the PC this year.

Haha, after playing a round of DC tonight I sure hope Hunter doesn't get BF2. Some of his great random insults include "Went to piss? I bet you really went for a golden shower", along with "f*** that was gay", or "go suck a cock", or my personal favourite - "you sure took a long time to load, do you have a s*** PC?"

Apparently there is a fake BF2 Demo torrent file flying around.... if you're wise you will stay away from it...

GameWizards in Canberra are saying $89 and availablility is the 27th. I thought it was meant to be 23rd for AU?????

GW are saying 23rd is US, not AU.

Nidz, Gamewarehouse have it for $84.95 + shipping ($6) and a free headset as well apparently.

EB give you $10 off if you pre-order from them, so assuming the game is going to retail for $99.95, that takes it down to $89.95. Dunno about the free headset thing though, it might not include that.

When I originally pre-ordered the game back at the beginning of May the 'free headset' deal wasn't on the Gamewarhouse page. But I checked my order status and they have now included the deal in my original order. Bargain! Not that I will be using them, I am picking up a set of the Logitech premium usb headset tomorrow from Umart.

Ok, doesn't look like it will be out as soon as we had all hoped:

All,

This email is to inform you that I will not be sending out the
Battlefield 2 multiplayer demo to our file partners upon its initial
release. As you're probably aware, GameSpot will be premiering the demo
for a 24-hour period once EA releases it. At this time, we do not have a
release date, but one is expected soon. When it is released, you'll be
able to download it from the GameSpot GameCenter
( http://www.gamespot.com/promos/bf2demo.html ) (no registration is
required) and the games official web site located here:
http://www.eagames.com/official/bat...ld2/us/home.jsp

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email. Unless you
plan on asking for the release date Smile

Mike

I must be sitting near a "+5 to Stupidity" aura, but can someone enlighten me as to what the benefits of an 'exclusive' release are, from the point of view of the developer?

Yeah I saw that headset bonus but the headset looks a bit cheap n' nasty.. I guess it costs nothing on top of the game so meh..

benefits of an 'exclusive' release are, from the point of view of the developer?Maybe there isn't one, only a benefit to the organisation that gets the exclusive release :/

The benefit to the developer is all the phat loot that Gamespot pays them to get the exclusive release.

Personally, I would have thought that a world-wide simultaneous release would help get the demo into more hands and attract more customers.

Then again: EA + short-term goals/cash. Enough said.
