Im having an argument with someone, about the safety of AMD's vs Intel cpus
it seems like hes watched that old toms hardware vid where they take the fan off the amd and let the cpu fry, coz hes using this argument 'take the cpu fan and heatsink off your amd, and youll see that instantly it will burn, as amds have no heat protection on them, whilst intel's shut down safely, and are able to run for atleast afew minutes without the cpu fan or heatsink' im running a64's, and i wouldnt be stupid enough to try that with an AMD OR an Intel cpu, so what do you's think? Are AMD's as safe as Intels now, or are they more likely to cause a fire, etc? |

I have only ever used AMD cpu's. I think I have installed one Intel.
Never had a cpu burn out or chip, so i can't say anything but good things about AMD but I haven't got experience with intel to offset it |

AMD are safer. This is because Intel chips have big nashing teeth that really hurt and easily draw blood. Sure AMD chips have that nasty venom but their teeth are too small and weak to pierce the skin.
That being said, dont think the AMD is without its defenses. When backed into a corner the AMD is said to be very aggressive and will fight to the bitter end, usually taking a limb or 2 from the poor creature it is fighting before it finially dies. Just make sure that your AMD and Intel chips are tightly secured under a cage of metal with a high speed fan in case it breaks through the metal (been known to happen on many occasions). If for whatever reason the AMD or Intel chip escape into your home, leave the house IMMEDIATELY and call a PC tech who is equiped to deal with these emergancy situations. that's a very old video, about 2 or 3 years ?
since that amd have brough in heat protection s*** on the cpu, and all nforce chips have extra heat protection. so in return to his argument, i'd just simply put it, you dun noe s*** fagget. |

I make a decision based on what motherboard I want. I liked the nforce2 mobos so I ended up getting an AMD. Works like a charm.

blahblah where they take the fan off the amd and let the cpu fry, coz hes using this argument 'take the cpu fan and heatsink off your amd, and youll see that instantly it will burn, blahblahblahblahblahblah Ermm yeahhh like, FIVE YEARS AGO! I'm still using a 1.3 thunderbird, so taking my HSF will cause my house to burn down. But if ANYTHING, AMDs are actually safer than Intels now since the Prescotts get so F*&)@!$King hot! Otherwise, the new non-XP althons will shut down if their temps get too hot. |

i often boot my amd chips (of all flavas) without their heatsinks on to see if they will post (admittedly, i turn them off pretty quick once they post)
mainly because heatsinks are such a pain in the arse removing and putting back on never had a cpu catch fire yet! (hah, unlike the powersupply that went up in flames at our lan friday morning) |

Thinking "yeahhh cbf with the heatsink, i'll see if it posts, then i'll know that my video card is working and i'll turn it off before it gets too hot." ...With a Duron 1GHz... Its now in 3 pieces. >_< |

Current AMDs have thermal protection from what I'm aware. However, I've never been stupid enough to remove a heatsink while it's operating at maximum load.
As it is, current Intel CPUs dissipate more heat that AMDs anyway, so the old 'head' arguement is currently a load of BS. Additionally, AMD CPUs have a much higher heat threshold as well. |

I recently put one of each of the processors, AMD and Intel, into a cage together, to let them duke it out, and whilst neither of the processors actually physically moved, I'm sure the AMD would've won it.

I've never had any heat issues with my AMDs. Mine operates at around 40 degrees C, which is not bad at all.
The only Intel I've ever had was a Pentium 166, and I was about 10 years old at the time, so I can't really give an informed opinion on them. |

S3 for win.
I think these kinds of arguments are about as useful as holden v ford. At the end of the day they're like comparing apples and oranges. This all said, yes prescotts are hot motherfarkers and you have to have specially designed cases in order to meet the warranty obligations (including little air tunnels in the sides of the cases etc). |

The tables have been turned since that video.
If you have an Old School Athlon with an ASUS board, you're right. It will just turn itself off before damage can happen. If you have a cheap s*** board like a A-BIT or ECS or some s***, to take the phrase from harold and kumar 'burn this motherf***er down!'. Nowadays the athlon 64bits have inbuilt protection. The tables have been turned. Intels run hot as s*** but the AMDs are as they say, cool and quiet. AMD for the win. Not only cheaper but better and faster. Oh, and ASUS board too. |
