I got a big problem, every time i do a (norton 2005 antivirus) virus scan it comes up with all these viruses and it deletes about half of them. Its a real s*** cause the viruses still hang around because they are "delete failed". I really cant be arsed to reboot in safe mode and go through the registry 50 times for each of these f***arse viruses just because they "cant be deleted".

Does anyone know if i can reboot and scan in safe mode and be able to delete these viruses once and for all?

cheers

surely there's a decent Linux based antivirus proggy you can boot off cd, get an ip automatically via your DHCP server and automatically update before scanning by now

I had this problem on my parent's PC, some of the virii were so heavily embedded into windows that they couldn't even be properly removed in safe mode (I didn't think that was even possible, but apparently so).

I made a Windows Preinstalled Environment cd, using Bart PE with Mcafee and Adaware and other various spyware/antivirus stuff built into it. Booted off that, ran the scans and removed all the virii and stuff, but then when I booted back into normal Windows things didn't work properly.

I think the virii were so deep into windows that when I removed them, it removed important parts of windows, because for one thing Windows Networking stopped working all together. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the networking components, and even doing a system restore off the original windows cd, it still wasn't working, so I ended up having to format and reinstall anyway.

But hey, good luck!

imagine a world where virus scanners/removers actually worked! ...

because of problems like what khel explained.. isnt there any virus scanners that you could burn to a bootable disk with the original sys32 files so then if it has to remove anything, it can auto-fixup with new ones?

Oh wow, I never knew that. I always thought the plural of virus was virii. Learn something new every day!

if you are using windows xp you have to disable system restore because if there are any virus files in the system registry etc windows will restore them.

try a different virus scanner such as AVG and see how it handles the situation. i have had it in the past where one scanner could not fix a file and just wanted to delete it, wheeras another scanner fixed the file no probs.

so yer, try another scanner before going to stupid measures.
