Mongie's gone to some sort of Toshiba training thing 'cause he sells Toshiba s*** when he's at work (Officeworks).
He's left though, like an hour ago. |

Ok, well since everyone cares, I'll fill you all in.
Basically, Toshiba held an information night to tell us all about their current / future series' of notebooks. The A70 which is the entry level series... the M40 which is the businessy sleek sexy centrino (sonoma) series, and the P30 which is the mega 17" screen p4 really fast but huge desktop replacement laptop. Highlight of the night was the presenter paying out dell (our industry do not like dell much because they sell cheaper than us). An example of this paying out was when he was bragging about how toshiba have two wifi antennas at the top edge of the screen, one on either side, and they both "fight for the best signal" he showed a graphic that had those crazy signal readouts, and over 100m, the toshiba had 97% signal the dell had something horrific like 27%, he said "an unnamed competitor" (circles the dell on his powerpoint slide) could only manage 27% signal. etc.. Good food (Coconut Prawns were the highlight) and free beer/wine but their "sample bags" were horrific. One of those big A3 clear plastic "pencil cases" with the plastic zip on top with a whole lot of propaganda inside and a mercure hotel (venue for the function) pen. They did actually give out some good info (I knew it all already, but a lot of the guys I work with arent _as_ tech savvy) on the new Centrino revision (codenamed "sonoma") which has a faster 533mhz bus, ddr2, pci-x etc... but yeh, I'd give the evening 3/5 *'s Hali-P (Done by HP) at the convention centre a couple of weeks ago was 1,000,000,000 times better, but there were also about 10x as many people there and they probably spent 10x as much on the evening. |

I did some SAN/mass storage solution sessions with Toshiba. They were ok. Personally I think it was ok, but it was really geared for manager type people. Lots of propoganda, really bad mouthing the competition rather than letting their own products make a name for themselves. While the products were good I mean..if it requires the speaker to bad mouth the competitors rather than letting the product do all the bad mouthing well...it leaves little to the imagination in my opinion. Then again I generally find the Toshiba spin doctors love to bad mouth everything :] |

Possibly the best thing they said... Toshiba Man: "Have any of you guys heard of LightScribe?" Crowd: "Yeh..." Toshiba Man: "Well, you would know that one of our competitors have it in their current desktops" Toshiba Man: "Well, we saw LightScribe and thought... Wow, this seems cool..., so we made it into a notebook drive, and now HP have to pay us a royalty when they put it in their notebooks!" edit: Thing is, I wanted desperatley to make the point that the DVD-SuperMulti's that they currently have in their notebooks are made by PANASONIC, not by TOSHIBA. But I was scared that they would bash me or kick me out or something, so I remained silent. He then proceded to brag about EVERYONE having to pay royalties to toshiba for DVD's. He also got onto the Blu-Ray v HD-DVD debate. (If you're well researched on this you would know that Blu-Ray is a far superior format, but HD-DVD has the benefit of playing regular DVDs as well. He bragged about Toshiba having secured 75% of the movie industry behind HD-DVD. last edited by mongie at 13:44:50 24/Feb/05 |
