Little tidbits seeping thru - Gooseman had this to say on PlanetCS.gamigo.de:
"I can't say much about CS2 .. All I can say is , everything is being done from scratch. There will be new guns but at the same time we'll be keeping some old ones. I'd say half new ones, and half old ones. We're also working on some new scenarios as well."
NO mention of them building it on a REAL game engine tho ;)

They are building it on a "real engine" - it's being done on the engine being built in house by Gary McTaggart and Charlie Brown that's powering TF2 (and rumoured HL2)

On id's engine licensing page it lists games on there that used the quake technologies. Half-Life, Soldier Of Fortune are among some listed, but TF2 is also listed there?

TF2 was originally based on a modified HL engine. But they changed later(well they better have because theyve been working on that thing for 4 years now!)

Yer we sorta finsihed work on it, But it was for graduation, so I'm not sure what is going to happen with it now :/

Yer I do remember TF2 Team sayign they were going to do a new engine from scratch. Which I think is a silly thing to do, as building your own engine from scratch can be a very costly afair. And besides 4 years is a long time to make a game. And in those 4 years its been hyped up by the comunity (the developers dont say much).
Lets hope they can deviler above expectation, because that is what we expect :p

it should be out by now.

but TF2 is also listed there?

They were originally using Q3 tech, but they swapped to their own engine...

Which I think is a silly thing to do, as building your own engine from scratch can be a very costly afair.

A general purpose engine designed for middleware use, yes, I agree. However, if you're building it specifically for a game, and you have competent programmers, it's not that big of a risk.

And besides 4 years is a long time to make a game.

It's been under 3 years since they released Half Life. Lets see how far it's come after ECTS ;p

But yes, 4 years is a *long* time to make a game. But at least what they've got is playable (as demonstrated by the constant playtesting they have there), unlike some other companies (plural) I can think of who've spent 4 years and still have nothing to show for it...

I know a friend who worked on models/animations for TF2 (for those of you who have gone to quantm to do that animation course, his name was Allan Mackay)

He said they finished it back years ago, but they were redoing it.

In that thing cliffe said "I can say much..... but we're doin things from scratch"

I'm pretty sure scratch would include a new/different engine, just his not allowed to say?

They realized that the silly DOD way that TF2 was heading was pretty crap? Screw that stuff, it's all fine and good to make a very team based game (much more so than CS or anything else) but who the hell is gonna play it as a team? Clan matches might be but that must be less than 1% of the games i've ever played, no-one cooperates on public servers and i can't see that changing anytime.

That's actually a good point Doober. In all the CS I've played online there is maybe 5% teamplay. The rest of the time it's basically CS deathmatch.

There needs to be some better system that rewards real teamplay. I think FLF gives bonuses when you are close to your teammates doesn't it? I hope the new games coming out can do something to improve this aspect of the game.

The only problem with penalties/rewards for bad/good teamplay is you will always get people who deliberately stuff up a team for their own twisted reasons.

No... not ANOTHER CS. Quite a few people might give up gaming if another CS rears its fugly head. I hate the CS creators EVEN MORE now. *walks away in utter disgust*

Why give it a break - the engine sucks phat assss..I'm not going to pretend it is a good engine or not mention its patheticness just because people are stupid enough to think it is a good game for this day and age =) And in fact now you mention it I'm going to post deragatory things about CS everyday for a week =)

Well it's not like you NEED everyone's cooperation in CS to play it. That's the beauty of the game, you can own as a team, or you can own in seperate units.
Gooseman said that even though it's a team game, the primary focus in designing it is that anyone can log on and be part of the action without having a meeting with their team mates before hand.

It's a shame there isn't more of it, but I'm glad the game isn't so dependant on team work, like, tribes 2, for example. If you aren't coordinated in that game you're screwed.

LoveRat: So even if it is the fav game on the net, it sucks? Using that logic, that makes Diakatana the best game engine EVER! Just play your game, and leave other people's alone. You've made your opinion on CS quite clear before.

Due to budget cuts, Sierra will be using a modified Quake1 engine for CS2.

yeah cs has rreally good team work balance, because the fact is taht most palyers are ofbelow average skill and beow average intellignce, so this is compensated by making it so that you can if your good enough own by yourself, i generalyl find on 12-14 player servers if i just have one other good palyer to work with that is enough, and even if i don't i will still end up top frags even if my team doesn't win all the time. so its good.

someone mentioned FLF, god i wish that game got the recognition it deserves, it is a fantastic game and the teamwork aspect of it is superb, you really need teamwork to win, but the game kind of forces people into it, so its sweet.

as for cs2, pfft, they havn't added a single featuer to improve counter-strike since beta6 so i don't see that a sequel is going to be any better than its current state. that said it will still probably be the best thing out there and so i'll still play it, just like cs now.

Axis, up until your last sentence you were making perfect logical sense. But you had to go and ruin it. FLF is good... not THAT good, it does need work. Urban Terror is a very polished mod for only its second beta, though it needs work too, but not as much as CS or FLF. UT has it all: eye candy, gameplay, weapons, etc... Oh, and DoD is a pile of dongs or something.

no one has said he deosn't flat out not make it.

even if he did, it wouldn't make much difference.

and why on earth do people bash gooseman? jstu wondering cause frankly, I cna't think of one reason to not like him if you like CS.
