Does n e one remember the lowest system that winamp ran fine on??? winamp.com's minimum system requirements are pentium 400Mhz wit 64mb ram but im sure it can run on something lower.

I wanna run a crappy laptop plugged into my cd player in my vehicle so i dont have to burn mp3 cd's and can have my whole list at n e one time. But i dont wants to fork out for a laptop that wont run winamp and dont want to fork out for one that i know definately will run it. i require this set up for sum long trips to and back to work everyday in the near future...

so does n e one remember running winamp on any machine less than 400Mhz without a problem???

why dont you run foobar, if interface is anything to go by, foobar would be much less intensive on the system...

Why I dont know, but I'll have a look FOR YOU on the winamp website...

Foobar 2000 Requirements

CPU:
200 MHz, AMD K5 or Pentium or equivalent (500MHz Athlon or Pentium III recommended)
RAM:
32 MB
Display:
800x600 resolution

I guess in retrospect you probably meant winamp 2.x when you said "winamp" but winamp 5 needs a PIII 500 or better.

Jimmy, I'd be reasonably interested in that thingy, does it work fine and everything?

How much are you thinking of? I have no idea what something like that would be worth...

it's all good that you only need some tiny amount of cpu power to use winamp, but what about the Operating System and booting up, by the time it's booted up and loaded winamp you'll have finished your trip!

and just how long to ipods last before they're f***ed/need new battery/need replacing/need new something obscure that costs as much as a new ipod?

yeah.

I think I ran winamp on my old p133 with 16meg of ram and windows 95/98 just fine years ago and it wasn't that slow to boot up either less than a minute if I recall. wd whoever said they take ages to boot up.

Yeah, that fantastic for you... my laptop (old 233) on a fresh install takes about 3 or 4 minutes to boot the OS.

Umm ... it's best to install a flavour of DOS and a command-line player. Lower system requirements, and you can be booted and playing music in under 10 seconds and not have to worry about a 'clean' shutdown since DOS doesn't really care.

o_O

I somehow missed the big paragraph where he mentioned purchasing. Well I guess that's an example of how not to reply in a thread :/

I ran Winamp 2.6x on my Win95 P120 16mb laptop and song change lag was tiny, almost unnoticeable. You couldn't have anything else at all open, though.
