Hey guys.

I've been wanting to setup my own web page and host it myself. I realise i have to pay a company to register a domain and put it in their DNS server. Im on 512down/256up ADSL, expecting low traffic it would run fine right?

Also subdomains, how come most companies charge you for them? Why does it have to go into their DNS. If i hosted it on fedora, wouldn't it for example, when looking for qgl.ausforums.com go to ausforums.com for an authoritive answer? that being my linux box?

Any explanation about subdomains and who is cheap/good domain registrar would be great.

OCAU or Whirlpool will probably get you 10x better responses than here.
:)

Lots of webhosts i have seen have unlimited subdomains.

you can get some pretty decent deals off ebay also - very competitive there

ive seen hosting as low as $25/yr (500mb/5gb bw) inc domain registration go on there, cpanel, unlimited subs, addons, emails, ftp accs, etc

You DONT have to have it pointing to their domain server, its being PARKED there.

Basicly what you will need to do is setup a BIND dns server on your home machine, or , if you dont know how or want to, for $30 a year you can get a DNS server from dyndns.org, which allows you to make all the changes including subdomains and redirects.

If you dont know a lot, BIND is going to be a BITCH to setup.

Let me know if you need more info.

Cheers Eds,

I've setup and run BIND at home and ...at QUT.

So the the dns for my domain will send the subdomain request to my linux box?

Basicly what you need to do is register your domain name, change the primary DNS to your home IP address.

Then, when you type in yourdomain.com the request goes to your DNS server. That DNS will hold the records for any subdomain you may have , redirects etc. you control all that from your dns(bind) server.

Catch22 is you MAY be required to enter 2 nameservers, so enter your IP twice, as the primary and secondary. Other option is make up something fake, doesnt matter because the fastest request will be your home address anyway.

This will seem like a stupid question, but do many domain registers give you the option of being the primary DNS?

All of them do. All of them do, however its pretty useless to you because it wont point to anything. If you dont want to run a DNS server, but you want full control, as I said, get yourself an account with dyndns.org

most isp's frown on people setting up their own web servers as well, check your AUP to whether or not they dissallow it. If they find you running one after telling you not to in the agreement you signed, that's probably cause enough for them to boot you off their network. Don't forget, what loads fast for you, will probably load slow for everyone else. For example, get everything you're going to host on a single page, be it pictures or whatever, then upload them to your own personal webspace, see how long it takes. Now consider it's going to take about that long for a single person to download to their computer (you UPLOAD to them) everything on that single page. If you have multiple pages of pictures or videos & stuff, I wouldn't even bother hosting it on your own computer/home DSL.

I would suggest not hosting it on your ISP's webspace, Whoop is completely right, most ISP's dissallow it in their AUP.

check out Hasweb, they are very cheap and reliable... www.hasweb.com

Thats why internode is so great, because as long as you dont damage their network, they allow all sorts of servers to be run.

I used to host my website off a box at home on a 512/128 dsl plan.

Also, unless you're going to be running a corporate site, dont waste your time/money on buying a domain. Goto www.whyi.org for free hostname registration. I have a whole bunch of yi.org sites, it's the obvious solution.

I don't want to seem like an a****** lits but, registering a domain is like $5-10USD max and that is for 1 year. It's not so expensive but upto you entirely. I just liked the wank factor of having my own domain and it didnt break the bank.

Thanks for all the feed back so far.

I thought i would check Lits idea out first, so i signed up and grabed a 'hostname'.yi.org page. Question for Lits really, in my RR record looks like follows:

# Name Type Data Enabled Hits Last Update
26429 madeup A (P) 203.173.20.204 Y 0 2 005-01-31

Does this mean now that when yi.org gets a request for 'madeup' it will send the request to 203.173.20.204 on port 80? Then all i would need to do is have a webpage matching that name in my cgi-bin yeah?

So im setting up apache...even though im not certian setting up that free domain should have been so easy.

im kind of stuck

# ServerName gives the name and port that the server uses to identify itself.
# This can often be determined automatically, but we recommend you specify
# it explicitly to prevent problems during startup.
#
# If this is not set to valid DNS name for your host, server-generated
# redirections will not work. See also the UseCanonicalName directive.
#
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# you will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.
#
ServerName domain.com:80

Server name...what whats that?

Do i have to setup a virtual host, or can i just wack a html file in var/www/html with the name domainname.yi.org and thats it? would appreciate some feed back / links to good setup sites, ive found some very small not so great how to's nothing indepth step by step kind of stuff.
