I just whipped this up so Aussie forum trolls can upload images and stuff with what I hope will be greater ease - if yall could test it out and let me know a) if it breaks and b) what you think that would be tres handy.

http://www.ausimages.com

Update 12/05/2005:
- Added in "show linking instructions" underneath viewable images so you can more easily link images (will work on every image)

Update 07/03/2005:
- You can now edit your image descriptions (and admins can edit them as well)
- Some admin functionality updates

TODO:

- better group management
- basic image editing? (maybe)
- public groups?
- image keywords?

Wanted:

- people to help moderate
- suggestions for new features!

Was probably the spaces in the image name that broke it. I'll try and fix it later. edit, I think I fixed it.

You can't upload the same image twice, this might be a problem if people are uploading files from digital cameras and might come across other peoples uploaded images due to the naming convention of some companies, suggestion might be to do what other image hosts use (imageshack) and put a few random characters at the end or start of the file.

Another thing, is this going to be purely for ausgamers/ausforums use? ie referer blocked? if not, the majority of forums out there in internet land use BB code's rather than allow HTML, would a possible to include a [img][/img] base textarea in addition to the HTML code?

As is this - I was planning on asking people to supply samples of stuff to add in. I don't know anything about other forums and I'm too lazy to look but if people want to provide samples I'll happily add them in!

nf, I dunno, the whole thing is just a big toy at the moment - until I get bored
mooby, as above - its just a test. every image that is uploaded at the moment I check out, plus its trivial for people to complain about things.

Uploading large files in PHP is plain dodgy anyway; there is a file size limit of a few megs and the script only accepts images - anything else will get binned (this is checked when thumbs are created).

If we were worried about what people could publish on our resources then we'd obviously have to shut down the forums!

after you upload a pic there should be a line of code that you can copy and paste into forums, so as the pic is displayed at a full size and not a down-scaled size. this would help n00bs liek me. its not always best to display a down-sized pic etc...

Any way of getting a bit of personalisation to it? Like you have to have an ausgamers account and all images go into a subfolder with your account? eg: skrybe/pic.jpg?

And if possible allow browsing of that folder. It's cool giving the sample html to link to the image. But it's a pain in the butt finding it if you forget and want to link to something later.
sKryBe
Posts: 3000

http://images.ausimages.com/upload/2005-01-28/TN_dog2.jpg

Also, if you do go for a bit of personalisation, could we get the option to delete an image that we've submitted? Or even if we can't delete it ourselves, can you add a "Request image deletion" button?

And on another note... the thumbs go into a whole different folder... and they're case sensitive. Might be worth pointing that out to users.

Very handy regardless. Good stuff Trog.

But the actual pic is located at:
http://images.ausimages.com/upload//2005-01-28/dog2.jpg

And the thumb said it was at:
http://images.ausimages.com/upload//2005-01-28/TN_dog2.jpg

Which is why I thought they were two different locations. Soz Trog.

Also, something probably not worth the effort, but awesome all the same... I would suggest maybe getting Nathan to (or you, if you have l33t skills) write a mega hax0r program that allows you to drag & drop files to ausimages then get back the code to make them work on the forums.

I started working on something similar (for an unrelated project) a while back, but it turned into a nightmare:

a) You can use ActiveX for IE, but then it doesn't work on Firefox
b) Even if you do use ActiveX, you have to teach users what it means when you get security warnings in IE about loading ActiveX objects
c) If you want to do a cross-platform solution, you have to use Java, which means requiring the JRE, which is painful.

If you are really keen you could write a wrapper (and by you I don't mean trog) to upload them for you, so you can drag and drop, tho it will suck if/when they change how you do things cos you'd have to rewrite your wrapper app.

I don't want to moderate, I don't have the time :(

I do however have another suggestion :)

How about giving users the option to create thumbs in a variety of sizes? You could allow them to pick from say 3 "standard" sizes to go with their larger image. Maybe 80x80, 160x160 and 320x200 or something similar.

I dunno whether it'd be best to limit it to picking a single thumb size or not. I think it'd be cool to make it possible to select more than one, so I could upload a pic and create a tiny thumb for here and a medium size thumb for some other site.

Might also be worth creating wallpaper size versions as well. eg: Allow the user to upload a 1600x1200 pic and choose to create an 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 versions automatically.

edit: If you're going to have people moderating then I'd assume you'll be creating moderation tools. Like a "New images for group xyz" page that'll give the moderator a gallery view of all the thumbs created since a certain date (like their last login). I'd also look at a few criteria based moderation pages like listing files by file size, maybe pixel size (if you can do it) and I'd also try to knock up some sort of word filtering to match files with offensive names or rude words in their descriptions.

Obviously, the last suggestion won't catch everything (and is easy to bypass) but it'd be a start.

How about giving users the option to create thumbs in a variety of sizes?
Disk space is too much at a premium at the moment for something like that but its worth considering.
i however don't want to be a moderator because last time i said yeah and got picked NOTHING HAPPENED (stupid command and conquer s***e) haha you suck!@#

Another thought, it creates thumbnails for tiny images as well. Might be worth checked the pixel size and if it's smaller than 128x128 then don't thumbnail it (or simply duplicate the file instead of resizing it).

eg: I just added a gif that was about 15x15 (724bytes) and it created a thumbnail that is 128x128 and 132KB.

update:

- Added in "show linking instructions" underneath viewable images so you can more easily link images (will work on every image)

edit: test example from some random image someone uploaded:

You should put on a fuction where someone could paste a link to a picture and ausimages saves it and then hosts it. So if someone see a pic on another site and they want to post it on qgl, they dont have to save it to their computer then upload

why? if a picture is that big you probably shouldn't be using a free image hosting site to host it. even on dialup pictures don't take that long to upload, just go do something else while you wait.

ausimages account thing isn't linked to here is it? I figure not seeing as you log in there with an email. I reckon it should be linked to the user db of ausgamers.
