same sort of thing happened to me, but not on my dose drive..

except the files were there, i just couldnt access them, or copy them, so i did a drive scan.etc, kept failing, format (lost 150~gb of stuff).. still wouldnt work

so i took it back on warrenty, and i get to go pickup my brand new replacment tommorrow

just getting at, maybe your drive is buggered, bad sectors.etc.. do a full surface scan by getting the software off the manufactors site and see how it results

yeah my IBM drive is like that, it won't hold an installation, makes funny clicky noises, yet it passes the drive fitness test program. I'd say the drive is about to die, back your stuff up if at all possible, maybe put it someone elses computer.

i had a similar problem using a linux distro, everything i downloaded and saved to the local drive was corrupt. so i installed xp, and the same thing happens. i can however download stuff on that machine and save it to a network drive without it corrupting. i imagine its the local drive itself probably dieing. i put in some brand new cables and put the dvd drive on the other ide and repartioned and formatted to see if there was any difference, but it still does the same thing.
might be time to get a new hdd.
