Check out ZDaemon, the first Doom port that caters specifically for solid client/server online Doom action. I've just smashed together a server for it, and man, the whole package just reeks of professionalism, not just because (unlike most fan stuff produced today) it actually WORKS, but also because the whole thing is schmick and easy to use.

Go Play on GameArena now, it rocks. The server is filling up with overseas HPBs who are fun to smack around.

fukin awesum, ima find some time tonight

when selecting a server to join and you dont have the proper .wad files etc, then zdaemon asks you wether you want it to search for it.
once it finds it, it automaticly installs the files needed to play the game.

a real professional program.
much props to the coder

You dont even need to install doom, the launcher will do it for you.

I had both the legit doom2 and ultimate doom wads in the directory and the game refused them.

So I just removed them and let it download it itself, turns out it's just the 1.4MB doom1 and 14MB doom2 shareware wads on all 4 GA servers.

So just download that zdaemon prog, there's a direct link right on thier site. install, run the launcher and click on the GA server in the list, the launcher will take care of the rest.

Weird - there is no shareware doom2 wad. It shouldn't actually let you download it - when I delete my doom2.wad it tries to download it but can't find anywhere to download it from.

Update: tried it again and it found one :( That's pretty dirty.

heh, bizzare. Mine donwloaded a doom2.wad from some russian url "13.9 MB (14,604,584 bytes)"

While my other, original doom2.wad was "14.2 MB (14,943,400 bytes)"

The one on the server is 14,604,584 - that's my original doom2.wad from waaaaaaaay back.

Just finished two runs through doom1 coop, but the doom2 server is full :/

Need to get some CTF action up in this piece, those maps are supposed to be pretty good, and that auto pak downloader thing should make sure everyone has the right stuff.
