I know there was already another thread about this, but in case you're not taking your regular dosage of Interweb, you might not be aware of the importance of upgrade to WinAmp 5.03 - check out this article for some more information.

Short story, there's a massive security hole, so make sure you grab it right meow. BigPond users can nab it locally, otherwise head over to www.winamp.com.

Update 16/8/2004: Winamp 5.04!

Weren't people saying they're having a lot of problems with stability in 5.03? Random crashes and the like? So the choice is between having a working stable winamp with a security hole in it, or having a buggy crashing winamp :(

I upgraded to 5.0 when it came out ( did the same thing when Beta 3 hit) both were pure ass.

Crashed all the time, selecting songs was a pain in the arse, shuffle didnt work properly, playing media apart from mp3's crashed it all the time, reloading playlists constantly.

Sticking with 2.78 for now!

I have a huge problem with it. It kept fecking crashing. Especially when I have EQ turned on. But even if I don't have that it'd just crashed anyway. I'm sticking to 5.01 for now.

Opec, using modern or classic skin? The first time I installed the 5 series I had a lot of odd problems; then I switched to classic skin and they all vanished.

Yeah I'm using the classic skin. I haven't tried using others though (with 5.03 that is) it just gave me so much crap that I had to uninstall it and reinstall 5.01 :(. In the mean time I just disabled the .xm and .xmz file extension in the preferences.

As Opec hinted, you can just disable the feature that is exploitable, and not upgrade. It won't do much unless you play xm files:

Open up: Winamp->Options->Preferences->Plugins->Input

Choose "Nullsoft Module Decoder" (in_mod.dll)

Open the Loaders tab and after selecting 'Fasttracker 2', untick 'Enabled'

foobar - www.foobar200o.org is the current audio player that im using atm... uses very little memory, plays pretty much all files and is pretty simple and easy to use...

i've used all the versions of 2.X & 5.X ... using 5.03 now. sure it hogs more memory than 2.x but i've got a gig of ram so who cares!? I use the modern skin & I've never had winamp crash once. I use winamp all day & night on 2 computers. ( i just leave 'em running, wtf not!? )
One guy here at work (out of about 30 who use winamp) says he has problems with it crashing... he also has problems with lots of programs crashing which leads me to believe that his OS setup is buggy.

I'm using winamp 2.8 with the in_mod.dll removed... from what I've read that's enough to fix the hole, and I don't have to run an even more memory-sucking bloatware POS.

meh, I'll upgrade just to see what's new or what they broke this time. Can always delete it & go back again. I haven't had many problems with winamp 5 crashing. The beta used to crash & go all stupid but the release is stable here. (using 5.0)

shouldn't you update the title too to reflect that it's now 5.04? I almost didn't click it because I have 5.03a
