Hey,

How do the LCD's matchup against good ol' crt's these days?

I've heard that LCD's still have issues with solid colours etc.

From a video/gaming point of view, are CRT's still vastly superior in terms of visual quality?

we sell both at work, and I use CRT's at home...

I think that some of the LCD's are really nice... (read: 18 inch LG, 17 inch WIDE philips)

but, i love my CRT (LG F700P) and, i hate the concept of native resolutions

I have a 17 inch Hyundai ImageQuest L70B.

Runs everything f***ing awesome and I am really glad I bought it,

I prefer the actual image then some projected thing from a tube that needs to take up half your f***ing desk.

what's this native res crap? first I've heard of it. price/size has meant I've stuck with CRT's because you can get a bigger screen for less bling bling.

I did however see a laptop with a 17" 16:9 widescreen display and it was pure sex.

At a guess I would say the native resolution is how many pixels are actually on the screen? So a 800x600 crt would fire 800x600 pixels at the screen, but a 1280x768 LCD screen would still have 1280x768 pixels on the screen at 800x600, it would just mix pixels together, that would look like ass.

Thats a guess anyway.

yeah native resolutions can be a pain, and i still think bang for buck a crt is the best value for money atm...

So basically with LCD's, you'd be wanting to run EVERYTHING at it's native resolution?

Doesn't this mean games are gonna chunk? native resolutions are quite high on lcd aren't they?

oh that sounds so incredibly gay. My friend wants an LCD because it'll save him space on his desk and his CRT is almost FUBAR, but he's got a relatively crap computer so running games in 1280x1024 or whatever is going to really suck for him ahhaha. Seems to me LCD's are mainly for those who want to stare at their monitor for long periods of time like people who read alot of onscreen text, browse the net alot, work on a computer doing mostly text based things.

well, you just have to put up with it i guess...

clipto (or whoever said it) was right.

LCD's have a set number of pixels... hence dead pixel.

most 17" run in 1280x1024, so if you run in 1024x768, the monitor uses its full 1280 pixels to display 1024 pixels worth of picture.... thus, bluring and general uglyness.

Went from a Samsung Syncmaster 955DF - 19" Flatscreen CRT, i think like 17-18" viewable

to

Mitsubishi DV172 - 17" LCD, 17 viewable I'm pretty sure.

Would never go back, the colours are awesome and it NEVER flickers cause LCDs dont! :D

Only problem I have with it is that some really dark games are REALLY dark, nothing powerstrip cant fix though :)

Oh I also love the auto adjust button on it, change res in anything, BIOS, windows, games whatever, its all out of wack, press the button and BZZT its all centred and alligned!

If you want LCD to play games then you'll need a pretty good one, one with good response rate (+-20ms), contrast and brightness.

Also you'll have to watch for dead pixels on LCDs some manufacturers will not let you return the dead pixels have a rather petty policy on ded-pixel return. So make sure you get the sales guys to turn on the monitor and take a close look at it before you buy it.

Other than that, LCD is as good if not better than CRT, it save space and electricity (though these aren't really that significant), less radioation emittion, flicker free etc -- unless you're a graphic artist who do need colour accuracy, calibration etc then CRT still the way to go.

I used CRT at home but I run at a high enough refresh rate so that _my_ eyes could not see the flicker i.e. 85 Hz. I've got a 19" Mitsu. flat and it's awesome. I would consider buying and LCD in the future but currently CRT suits me just fine.

I can't use anything < 100 hz without seeing the refresh rate, the other monitor blew and I'm stuck at 800x600 cos 85hz f***s my eyes over.

the benq fp737 does not suck. It does anything but!

My dad bought one so I flogged it for a few hours and tested it out in games etc.. It makes the games look so much fkin better its not funny! 16ms response time, and the monitor itself looks really good aswell :D id recomend it.

I used to run at 95 Hz, There is a difference between CRT and LCD. I already have crappy eyes and I find the LCD is much easier on them.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I will be buying an LCD very soon, If I run a resolution of 1028x1024 I need to look at the specification to make sure the LCD supports it, even it the LCD which I am looking at is a 17” ?

Benq lcd monitors are s***, we used to sell them at work , but we've stopped too many people having problems with them.

Do check out the Hyundai, they make very nice lcd monitors, and offer 3 year warranty on them as far as i know.

Viewsonic, not bad but have chunky borders around the lcd which i hate, viewsonic have the dead pixel warranty. and 2 years on facturey warranty.

Thrax the native resolution of all the monitors on the market at the moment is 1280 x 1024.

I know it is for all the 17" ones anyway.

Been selling the Benq, Samsung and Mitsubishi which have been going great. Not many DOA or dead pixels.

For the BenQ I would go for the FP767 or the FP791. For the FP767 there are two models. The purple colour has normal warranty and the Red version has a Zero bright pixel warranty. This means if there are any bright pixels on the screen they will replace it. Both of these models have 16ms. The FP791 has SRS surround speakers and a multi card reader on top of the unit.

For the Samsung I would go for to 172X which does 12ms response time. The warranty for Samsung is that if you have a dead pixel in the first 7 days of purchase you can get a new replacement.

For Mitsubishi the DV175 is pretty good. The old models which is DV172 had 16ms response but the new models does 20ms.

Anything with 16ms should be great with games.

You can get these monitors from Umart and Gamedude.

I'm still wondering about native resolutions...

People with LCD's - do u play every game at the native resolution? I'm just concerned about buying an LCD then having new games come out which chug like ass in such a high res.

I never used to run games in native res, coz my vid card couldn't hack it. Its no problem running 800x600, its just like running a lower res on a CRT. Since I got my 9800 Pro I run everything native now tho.

Do all LCD's have that thing (forget what you call it) where you have to be directly in front of the screen to get a decent picture. my friend ahs one and it sure is good but you can't see dick unless your right infront of it. Kind of pain.

Would be bad if you have alot of light in your room?
