Disclaimer: I'm something of an Agnostic.

I saw this movie last night at a preview showing, and thought I'd give my impressions.

It's a powerful movie. Christ's suffering is portrayed in a very high level of detail. However it is never gratuitous; the extreme viciousness and violence is simply how things were in those times.

Definitely not first date material :P

The movie seems highly accurate, though of course Gibson's interpretation of some events/issues comes through (which is perfectly reasonable, and expected). Primarily this would be the appearance of the devil in the film.

The set design, makeup, and casting are all very well done, and highly realistic.

At no stage did I feel that any anti-semitic viewpoint was being pushed upon the audience, in fact I think that opinion is completely unfounded.

Anyway, worth seeing imo. Not much else to say - most people know the story, and it's done accurately and powerfully.

So whats the deal with the language in the film. Is it subtitled at all or is it all in another language?

Not sure if I could sit through something if I had no idea what was being said.

It's mostly in Aramaic (the Jews)and Latin (the Romans). It's subtitled though. There isn't a huge amount of dialogue anyway, so there isn't even all that much reading to do really.

hmm thats the first I've heard of that - will be interesting to see how he incorporated the devil into the movie. How exactly was the devil portrayed physically?

I don't think many people can really argue for or against its accuracy as there aren't excactly any eyewitnesses getting about these days.

There's an excellent show on SBS on Sunday night called "Who wrote the new testiment". It's a historical/scientific look (in series) that try to work out who actually wrote the new testament, which started last week. Very good show, I'd recommend it.

PS No I'm not christian but it's interesting to watch.

If I recalled recorrectly it's on at 7:30pm on Sunday night. I'm not sure how many parts there are in the series. And you're right, it is very interesting.

"Jesus talking to (Pontius) Pilate and Pilate to Jesus in Latin!" exclaimed John Dominic Crossan, a professor of religious studies at the Chicago-based Roman Catholic De Paul University. "I mean in your dreams. It would have been Greek."

Jesus could walk on water, but he couldn't speak another language? :P

Also, i'm glad they left out the bit where Jesus and his diciples go visit that guy in the forest. Too much singing for my liking.

I am looking forward to this movie so much. We finally have directors who will make a movie based on facts, and not on what hollywood says. Well done to mel gibson for doing this.

jebus.. your touchy. i didn't post my opinion on it one way or the other and i did read the article, they mentioned more than just hair, did you read past the first page? anywoo my intention of posting that wasn't to piss you off, it was more to generate discussion.

btw did anyone here hear about the lead actor in the movie that plays jesus, apparently after filming the movie he was struck by lightening on two seperate occasions. Ive heard this several times lately, did anyone here ever hear of this happening?

Yeah its true, but considering the location and sets they'd have used (guy on a cross), its not so amazing.

The devil was portrayed as George Bush.

Actually no. I don't want to give stuff away really, best if you see it for yourself. Mind you there's nothing especially exciting about how the devil was portrayed.

the "guy" who played Jesus was Jim Caviezel, he was in the count of monte christo.

i was under the impression it happened after filming for the movie had finished but yeah if it was during the filming of the movie it would be a little more understandable.

I saw the movie today.

I was quite impressed. Very graphic and realistic. Be warned though it's extremely gory and violent.

I don't know why people are kicking up s*** about it - gibson is just telling the story as it happened in the bible. Jews having a whinge saying it's anti-semetic...well the jews ARE the ones that went after jesus - are they trying to hide this fact? You don't see people having a protest when there are world war 2 movies about the death camps and stuff. Ooh it's anti-nazi! whatever. Just telling it how it is.

I saw some of the cast interviewed tonite on E-news on Fox. The lead guy was telling the interviewer about how hard the shoot was. He was up on that bloody cross for five days in freezing temperatures, during the flagellation scene he actually got hit twice, and then got hit by lighting as well.

The spooky thing was when Mel Gibson rang him and told him and offered him the part the actor realised something.

He suddenly tells Mel, hey s*** my initials are JC and Im exactly 33 years of age. (same as Christ at the time)

Gibson apparently said, "You're freaking me out!" and hung up!

Just watched this movie. Man, it was f***ing amazing and extremely moving. If this film is any indication of what Jesus went through in his last 12 hours, then f*** me. That was insane. Can't get over how graphic it was and the scene at the end where they nail him to the cross is unbelievable.

I'm not a religious person but this movie is definately worth watching. Well done to Mel Gibson for making this. Truly awesome.

well i saw it and thought it was but meh...

there was no real sense of jesus dieing on the cross to forgive the sins of man...

just a gore fest of blood and whipping then (what felt like) 2 hours of him draging the cross to the site...

since everyone knows the story...

i thought it should have concentrated on being more focused on having the audeince feel what he was doing for mankind

The movie was unejoyable but well done.

And unfortunately for Mel.. not historically accurate. Aparently Greek was the most common language spoken back then, and it wasn't used once. And the latin was bad butchered aparently. Shoulda just spoken English.

Pretty much summed up what the Movie Critic wrote two pages in the current issue of the Bulletin, Obes.

He did point out tho that Mel Gibson has broken two of Moviedoms commandments....
1) Never use your own money for a Movie;

2) Subtitles.

Think I'll wait till this hits the DVD stores.

hehe found these pretty funny reviews of the movie:

I guess like most people who just saw Passion of the Christ, the first thing I thought as I left the theater was, "Wow, those Roman dudes really beat the snot out of that hippie! They must have hated that freaking hippie!"

Also, I guess I wondered why the hell the were beating up the hippie, and what the hippie's deal was. See, there's no context to Passion: just straight-up flesh-ripping violence porn. If you want to see a naked guy get whipped, flogged and nailed, and you live in a community with limited access to gay leather magazines, then this is really the movie for you.

It's from here

And another one here: What's so funny about the Passion?

When Megan Spencer reviewed it she compared it to Matrix Revolutions, which she said was better. Apparently Revolutions gives the view a better representation of the sort of torture jesus endured, as you really feel the pain. Even jesus would have said "f*** that s***" and walked out.
