A little slow on this one, sorry we've all been pretty busy. The Painkiller demo was released today, this demo release is Single player only:
Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy a gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. It’s an adrenaline addict’s nightmare, where hellish monsters swarm in seemingly endless mobs.

Graphically, Painkiller is unmatched. Played out over more than 20 completely unique and different levels, the proprietary 3D engine puts out 100X the polygons of the latest shooters, while adding increased texture quality and the latest lighting and shadowing techniques.

Grab the demo from AusGamers files here now!

Zombies galores! how cool is it when you fire a wooden stake and it sends a bad guy halfway across the room and pins him to the wall, also the physics are pretty good shoot someone in the foot and see them slap down onto their face, lots of nice touches, hope the full game is just as good!

Must say the graphics are f***ing nice. Also, is it just me or does the gameplay slow down (as in frames) when s***loads of creatures are on the screen? I've got it set to the next res above 1024 and when I got to the scene where there are witches and those dudes that look like grim reapers, the game slows right down. I'm gonna go back and play it in 1024 and see what happens but if I can run BF at that res and not get slowdown then I don't know why it does it with this.

Also, cool game but I think I'd get bored trying to play thru the whole thing.

Err cause it's a different engine with about 10 times better graphics than BF1942?

Anyway, I reckon the game is awesome, awesome fun. Zombies and wicked weaponry. No thinking, just visceral combat. I like it :)

Pretty awesome game, thumbs up from me. But yeah, I did notice some pretty horrid slow-down at times. Most of the time it ran beautifully, but when there were s***loads of creatures on screen at times it slowed down to a crawl, or that bit where you're in the palace courtyard and all the archways and stuff start crumbling and falling down, that slaughtered my frame rate. Also, when you fight the boss, and he slams his hammer into the ground right in front of you, frame rate drops to about 5fps until he lifts his hammer back up :(

I died once on the first level, but after I got the hang of it I went through the rest of the levels without dying. In fact, in the later levels I ended up with stupid amounts of health (like over 200) and armour, so if anything I'd say the earlier levels were hardest.

Also, I love what they've done with the weapons. The alternate fire on each weapon is generally so good and so useful that its basically like having two weapons in one. Like that gun that sprays out shards or ninja stars or whatever they are, but then its alternate fire turns it into a kick ass lightning gun. And the rocket launcher's alternate fire turns it into a chain gun!

Shoot his hammer, then shoot him. See the red circle around the face at the middle top of the screen? Thats its health. (at first is shows the hammers 'health'
bah cant kill these guys that have axes for hands.
Their belly's do not have any armor. One shot into the belly with the stake gun kills them.

running it at 1024x768 4X AA and 4x AF and it runs sweet as..I like it for the same reasons as Orbitor. Nothing cerebral..just slaw fest ala Serious Sam. Great for their first effort.

Ah, is that where the screen goes all blurry and you shoot lightning or some s*** from your hands? I couldn't work out why that happened, I thought it was something I picked up, reminded me of the Beserk from doom.

Call me stupid, but erm.. What does the first gun do in secondary mode? :/ I know you can stick that spikey thingy onto a wall and aim in that direction and circle around your enemies to kill them... But why does it fling them towards you if it makes contact with them on firing?... Can you fling them... Elsewhere? :D
[Q]

Dunno why it flings them to you, I guess its working like a grapel in that case. If you pick them up and hit them into the air a couple times they will drop I think a coin which is worth more than the normal ones... I think.

It would also help if you were trying to collect the souls of guys on balconies, pulling their bodies off the balcony so their soul spawns on the ground.

Personally I didn't like the game at all, it wasn't scary and just seemed very repetitive..well actually I only played the first level and didn't enjoy it so I didn't bother playing the rest. I think I'll just wait until Far Cry...I was much more impressed with that demo than this.

You can throw the grapple thingy, and when you look at it a beam will form. If any enemies touch this beam, bye bye! But its a bastard to use.

Fary Cry was one of the most boring, unoriginal, uninspired, gumby feeling games I've played recently. This easily wins, hands down, over Far Cry.

you throw the grapple thingy and leave it on the ground. Then line your crosshair up with it on the ground. A big beam of light appears - anything that touches the beam of light gets smacked. You can move around to dodge stuff or change the angle of the beam, but you need to keep your crosshair centered on the little blob thing you shot onto the ground.

Another thing with the grapple, is that as you are pulling someone towards you and they are going over your head if you use the mele on them you can keep then in the air and gold comes out :)

I found out a groovy new trick with the stake gun! :)

You can actually use the grenades, and pop them on the way down with your stake shooter... very handy I found... :)

EDIT: Also the lightning gun does a funky trick if and while you are using the lightning, you fire a shuriken at the same time.. it does a cool blast/surge thingy.. I'll let you figure out the rest and how to use it properly. ;) (Note: It eats like, 40 lightning cells each time you use :/)

Great fun. And I think kills during the haste effect (or whatever the blurry black & white screen is) ruin your "stake only frags" so you can't kill anyone while in that mode if you want the reward.

I started playing around with some of the ini files in the data folder and changed some basic stuff. You can do a few cool (but ultimately useless ;) things like changing the trails behind the grenades and which sparks come out of which weapons...

im enjoying this game quite a lot, and i find it hard to believe. it's been a while since i've enjoyed brainless slaughter of this magnitude since...Serious Sam?

but anyways, this is definitely a B-grade game, but i find quality B-Grade games to be lacking at the moment, so this is quite refreshing

Thats a negative, Using "Beserk" mode doesn't interfere with your "stakes only" game when trying to unlock the haste card. I just went "Beserk" and still unlocked the card.

yer beserk just slows everything down and allows u to one shot kill everything. ranged weps kill from afar but the spinning wep u need to be right beside them.

Well I found cool things to use the funky laser pull gun thingo... on. Dont know if anyone else tried. But on the 1st map you can kinda fly using the wheel barrows. Also the broken deck that hangs from above in the sector with all those zombies that come out of the coffins you can use that to get onto the roof. Anyways... I have pics (pics or lying!!!111).

hmm i don't know khel, i kinda liked the Far Cry demo. i mean, seriously, i played that game for less than 5 minutes all together, it had major graphical issues on my PC (maybe another one of those ATI problems not unlike CoD). when i had settings on high, the game chugged, when i had it on medium, u can hardly see anything, everything was glitched out (i don't know how to describe it). but when i had settings to high, i did walk around a little, and i felt like i had freedom and that i could choose to tackle the island however i wish (as in, from whichever angle i choose). but maybe if i played more of it, i would see things from your perspective. im not even gonna bother to try though, im gonna wait for the full release along with some patches, otherwise im gonna steer clear of this game.

Hitman i think you are having Ati issues no doubt, everything was silky smoothe and ran well on my Ti4200, no glitches nothing, also i must mention there seemed to be some graphical glitches in Far Cry for me when i was near the satellite dish

I ran the Far Cry demo on ATI (Sapphire) 9800XT with no problems and silky smooth. The demo did have some issues with AA being turned on which screwed it bigtime apparently, on any card Nvidia and ATI.

I think both titles will attarct their followers but I really like the feel of Painkiller...of course the one I am really hanging out for is a STALKER demo....that will be very interesting indeed.

piss off..

have you seen what they're doing to Thief 3 yet to make it work for the "X-Box" audience.. it's sad when developers think we're in the same league as console n00bs.

Apparently the PC version will mirror the version made for XBox... hardware limitations are indeed a bitch

it sure does, and anyways, koopz, i understand internet humour is hard to detect sometimes, but i was only joking. if i thought the XBox was the only way, would i have paid over 2000 grand for a bloody PC? didn't think so. but console gamers are not n00bs, although there is a higher percentage of console gamers who are less..."technical" than PC gamers, consoles present a different gaming experience than PC, FACT. if you can't understand that than you can't call yourself a gamer, just like people can't call themselves human beings if they choose to discriminate against another race.

as for the Deus Ex 2 thing, don't be a sheep. you're only saying that b/c the entire geek community in the world is saying that. i've played the first game, and although the second game is simplfied to an extent, it doesn't make it worse (well, judging from the demo, and a few very well informed reviews). you can blame the XBox all you want, but in the end, the REAL difference the XBox made to the game is that the levels are smaller than the first game, and that is a shame, but when you consider the graphical abilities of this game, it does make sense, even for PCs. the Xbox made very little difference to the core gameplay, but even if you disagree, the truth is it isn't actually worse, simplicity has its advantages. Go read PCPowerplay's review, they explain it the best. The game is just as sophisticated for Xbox gamers as it is for PC gamers, it was designed for both platforms, not just the XBox and then ported to the PC. but ofcourse, they also mentioned that if the Deus Ex games were the only games available, Deus Ex 1 would get 100% and Deus Ex 2 would get 50%. the original was very hard to live up to, so whichever way they went about developing it, some miserable person in this world is going to complain.

it took me very little time to google up a decent array of console emulators. what r u going to do on your XBox/Sony PS2/Nintendo? they're pretty average, even if some do MAME almost as well as a PC.

but hey - each to their own. I spent thousands on consoles before I worked out they were merely designed to get as many bucks out of me than I was willing to part with. I guess many of us will be the same.

Gimme a quality 3D-shooter on the PC anyday

I like console for the fact that four of us can sit around on the lounge and play split screen racing games on a big tv. No need for four separate PCs and networking. *That* is the only good thing about xbox.

I dont see how thats really a valid statement. I even bought a ps2 when they were new and cost far too much (cost me about $650 from memory), and that was over 3 years ago and its still going strong and still giving me great games to play. I'm sure many people here have spent more than $650 on their PCs over the last 3 years to keep them up to date so they can play the latest games.
