its academic stuff unfortunately:/ wish it was movie trivia.
eg. What distinctions does Elyce Rae Helford make between Cat and (the other guy) in Red Dwarf? |

sorry - Cat and Kryten.
Also, what are the 3 major differences between apocolyptic and post-apocolyptic films. |

*shrug* my uneducated look at it.
Cat has Long pointy teeth, self serving personality, vain and stylish in a weird sort of cat way. Kryten square head with no teeth, lives to serve others, no sense of style. Apocolyptic, stuff starts out normal amd at the end stuff is blowwing up, bleak outlook, main event is some big world shatering thing (nukes T1 T2 T3, aliens ID4, meteors Deep Impact or one of those gay movies, virus 12 Monkeys). Post apocolyptic, subsistance living, futuristic items being used in neolithic manner (mad max), Things we take as granted now being a valuable commodity (water, food, clean air, fuel eg. mad max, postman), Distorted references to current events/people/places (eg. Planet of the apes and statue of liberty, that stupid dragon movie and its reference to star wars) |

themost obvious distinction i can see is that the cat is smooth, basically one extreme of the human emotional scale, whereas kryten is the other extreme.
cat = cool kryten = stiff my 2c. |

obes is close with the apocolyptic stuff. need more though:/
if in post apoc films the people rely on certain commodities usually taken for granted to survive what is the difference in apoc films? could it be perhaps that it is human's greed and corrutption of these things that lead to the devestation? |

a refinement. how about "in post-apocalyptic, survivors rely on items that were once commonplace, and now are extremely rare/valuable"

Also, last question I am not too sure about (again it is more academically based but who knows):
What makes stories about aliens in the family such a useful American sitcom variant? |

yeh erik, its more the difference of that between the apocolyptic films that i need:/ its ok though i think i nailed that question. my 3 major differences were:
1 Apoc film is concerned with the catastrophe itself while post examines life after catastrophe (obvious but fkn major) 2 Themes of apoc films concerned with fragility of human life while post themes include survivalist and resilience of masculinity 3 survivors in post rely on simple and primitive means and technologies to survive, while it is often technology and greed that causes catasrophe in apoc films :D |

on that note... i heard a mate say that UQ now have no compulsory pre-requisite subjects, rather they have to 'suggest' that students do one subject before another. apparently they can't stop you from doing one subject just because it's a continuation of another.
anyone heard something like this? |

Well, I'm at UQ and did it all of this year.
I'm studying Science, spent all of the first year doing maths/phys and organic chemistry. At the end of the first year I realised that there isn't much chance of real work in that field. This year I studied genetics/human physiology/biochemistry/biological statistics/developmental biology/immunology/pharmacology/biophysics. All are 2nd year subjects. No-one ever said that I couldn;t but it made it a lot harder. I never did high school biology, so my first introduction was 2nd year uni subjects. s***s me to tears when an exam question incorporates prio knowledge |

Stick I'd be careful about using terms like masculinity, thats sexism and unis generally speaking hate it (regardless of wether it reflects reality).
I am trying to think of a post apocalyptic themed movie with a strong female role, but none come to mind. Except maybe Tine Turners role in Beyond Thunderdome and it was pretty crappy. And you made no mention of the whole Planet of the ape state of liberty, and futility of man kind! :p |

asid planet of the apes has anything to do with it;)
and the reference to masculinity was taken from a lecture. the film subjects at UQ love looking at films from femenist views. the EMSAH school aint shy about sexism. |

I am a UQ student, and I can affirm that there are no pre-requisite subjects anymore, and you are right they can only have "suggested courses" for you to complete before hand. It was done because some people have skills from the outside world that allow them to fast track to higher grade subjects. |
