Correction that is a landing at the old famous Hong Kong airport.
When landing you came in on the checker board and then had to make a very very late right hand turn to make the runway. And as you can see that 747 turnrd too late. Engine strikes weren't uncommon there. The pilots damn well earnt their pay landing there thats for sure. |

Thats Kai Tak Intl at Hong Kong. Its now closed, but tail strikes and engine strikes happen a fair bit there. Theres even been a plane go screaming off the end of the runway. Interesting bit of trivia: A tailstrike there that caused damage to the rear of the plane was partly responsible for the mid air breakup of a JAL 747 in 1985(I think it was 85)

no computers dont land planes at kai tak, aircraft autopilots will not turn a plane to the angle required to take the last turn. in fact the first airbus's that tried to land there, with their fly by wire system, refused to allow the pilot to bank the aircraf enough. a quick modification had to be made before any could land there at all.
and the jal 123 that broke up and crashed into a mountain was due to a repair that boeing technitions did around the aft pressure bulkhead. instead of 2 rows of fastners to hold it together, they f***ed up and only used 1, even though the repair scheme called for 2 rows. |

Cainer when they do major repairs like that a Class D check is made. With like a total of like 70,000 - 90,000 man hours worked on it, in 2 weeks.
Class D checks take out everything. Plus everything that is repair is checked up to four times by different inspectors. So if anyone f***ed up it would have been the inspectors? And i like how Qantas have stated that the ex Malayasian airlines 747 that has a 76 cm crack in the aft of the plance above the cieling did not pose a threat to passenger safety. I was like WTF? Not only is the most turbulence created around the tail of the plane. A crack less than that would lead to failure and bye bye tail section and demise of the plane. But then again i suppose they didn't want to scare the public. |

and u want to know why its not a problem..
mainly because boeing have always built aircraft with 2 main philosophies. 1) plane structures are of a failsafe design. even if the crack did split open and fail, the fuselage would have stayed in tact, although this isnt likely to happen. 2) if there is such damage, as has been found, its designed to last until the next major check, ie the D check its currently undergoing. this crack was caused due to chinese d******* 'workers' using hard metal scrapers digging sealant, which is admittedly f***en hard to get out, but none the less, took off the cladding of pure aluminium(the first defense for corrosion protecion on aircraft) that surrounds the aluminium alloy, possibly introducing metal particles into it, causing it to be trapped beneath the paint and sealant, causing it to corrode. either that, or they f***ed the radius's up that are around the production joints where there crack is, and introduced a stress raiser, which is the first place to crack when it undergoes stress, that of pressurising and depressurising. and i dont think its appropriate to go blame qantas for this, it was unforseen, blame the chinese painters. boeing is already about to ream them, and quite possibly revoke their authority to paint aircraft which they can well do. this paint shop has painted 20 747s since the qantas one, so u can only imagine how many are flying around with the same sort of damage. |

Sorry Cainer i didn't know you were a engineer...
So do you think Qantas have a chance of getting Malayasian Airlines to pay the repair bill? Are you guys going to carry out the repairs or do you get like boeing guys in from seattle? P.S. I wasn't blaming Qantas for the crack/corrosion. I was merely saying i was disappointed at there press release, saying "passengers weren't in any danger." Where as they potentailly are!?!? would you agree? |

maybe the paint shop will be responsible for compensation for this, but u think qantas will end up paying for it.
boeing have sent some guys out to look at it and we're waiting for a repair to come from them. i personally dont think people were in immediate danger, if it had progressed to say, what the damage on the china airlines 747-200 that broke up last year i think, which had a similar crack, but was 1.7metres long, then yeah. then again what would u expect management to say?? |

Cainer i have always wanted to know how the the jet engines start on planes? In the engines do they have an electical engine that starts the spool run off the APU, then when it's going fast enough fuel is added and ignited? Or am i way off? |

the APU has an electric starter and it runs off the 28v battery, to start the apu, once the apu is going, bleed air is taken off it through the aircraft and goes to the wings, and down the pylons and into these relatively small but powerful air turbines, which are driven by the air, and are connected to the gearbox, which in turn will spin the N2(ge cf6) or N3(RR rb211), and once a certain rpm is attained, fuel is added and the engine spools up. (mind u the ignitors are always firing until the engine is running, which are similar to spark plugs, just a s***load stronger)

yeah ive departed china northern 777's before, but they never did start 2 engines at once, although i wouldnt put it past them. the apu is alot bigger.
747's are able to start 2 engines at once, but mind you the 747 engines pump out ~60000lbs of thrust compared to the GE90's on the 777's that put out in excess of 100000lbs. u got not idea how big these things are until youre standing in front of it, theyre like 3m in diameter. |

Boofe: If you apply now and get an apprenticeship with QANTAS there is a chance that you may be able to move back up to Brisbane after a year once theyve gotten themselves sorted with the 767 facility that theyre currently working on. I had my interview with them a couple of weeks ago, still waiting to hear back.

Didn't a few Air China plane go for a swim on/in the old Airport at HK. I have done the old runways at HK a few times in the late 80's early 90's, my favorite was the first time in 87, we landed at night, during the approach the plane passes between 2 hills/maountains with building on both sides of the plane, you fly between peoples washing. I was pretty pissed and thought we were going down, until my mate who was also pissed started laughing as he had been to HK before, said I looked out the window and went all white and quite for a few seconds. Bastard!

autopilots are misconceived by the general public.
generally, theres 2 types of autopilots; ones that keep a certain airspeed, straight and level, maintain a turn angle etc. the others are navigational autopilots which will fly the plane according to a map it has internally, by notating where the transmission towers are physically on the land, and lining them up with the towers that are in its computer. in australia there is no autoland facility, only ILS(instrument landing system) which basically fires a beam out and the plane intercepts it, and thats why the plane always magically banks and ends up facing the runway. in fact, barely any airports have autoland, only airports with constantly poor visibility, mainly europe, but generally ILS is enough. im not sure on the amount of feet before the ILS gives control to the pilot, but every time ive flown in the jumpseat, about 8 times now, pilots have never let the computer land the plane(for the obvious reason previously stated). the simple fact why that video wouldnt be auto pilot, is because there are no autopilots sophisticated enough to be able to yaw a plane that much in 1 direction, then flick it back around seconds before it touches down, thats just an experienced pilot doing his job. ive sat in the jumpseat once and it was a similar landing to that, looking to the right of the runway, but heading straight, at the last second he straighted it up and had a nice landing. |

Do you know Andrew Collins? Hes a first year mechanical apprentice. Apparently Alliance have recently fitted out one of their F100s with some new fancy GPS approach gear(Cant remember the specifics)for the approaches to New Caledonia. |

ah yeah russel is the big boss of apprentices, he's drives an awesome ute.
dont know andrew. and i used to work for alliance when they were called flightwest airlines(hence the reason im @ qantas in sydney:(), and i remember when the rockwell collins guys were out doing testing of that satellite landing system on the fokkers, for going to norfolk island i think you mean. i believe they only brought the aircraft in to within 300 ft before the pilot took control. but apparently its still alot better then ILS. |

Anyone have any links about the beats Russian jet that had 3 engines on each wing and was used for cargo/military in the late eighties. It is flying again afetr years of sitting around.
It was also used to transport there Space Shuttle. I think it was called the A7 or somthing along those lines. It makes a 747 look small... anyone know this one?? I saw it in a doco on cable tele a few weeks back, very interesting. |

Yeah the F100 at alliance has a satellite land for norfolk island landings because of the really poor visibility and weather on some approaches, but they have had nothing but troubles with it since day one.
