My name is Mike, im from Brisbane, Australia and i just learned that Oceania will not get a direct qualifying spot for the FIFA World Cup 2006 after it was confirmed last year that Oceania will have one direct qualifying spot.

Why is this? I speak on behalf of Oceania and ofcourse Australia who always misses out due to having to play off to an AFC or CONMEBOL nation.

It is 1:30am Sunday morning on the east coast of Australia and i am one of the first Australians to find out this disgraceful news regarding the non-direct qualifying spot - expect more disgruntled Australian and Oceanian fans to write in.

How is it a 'World Cup' when not all confederations take place?? - its ludacris, The World Cup can almost go in the same boat as how the Americans call the Baseball 'World Series' when only 2 teams take place and they are both from the United States.. its just stupid.

The sport of Soccer in Australia is regarded as the sleeping giant of Australian sport. After the confirmation last year with Oceania getting a direct spot Soccer Australia was set to take off.. If Australia does not qualify for the 2006 world cup it will only do bad for the game in this country and the wider region of Oceania.

Soccer Australia was set for a big next few years, now its uncertain.

yeah CONMEBOL were pusing to have the numbers upped from 32 to 36, when this wasnt granted our automatic spot was taken from us to appease them. Its an absolute joke.

we'll have to qualify through either asia or south america, probably asia this time around. seeing as its being held in germany.

I can see your point but last time I check Toronto and Montreal were in Canada....so it does emcompass more than just the US.......just. Still isnt really a WORLD series tho. They wont do it that way cos they know that Cuba, Korea and Japan would kick thier butts.

Oceania Loses World Cup Spot, thankfully World Cup Spoot is safe.

I felt sorry for Australia when they lost to Iran in the qualifiers as i believe they should have won and as a result they should have entered the world cup. Another upsetting moment was when Holland lost to (was it to iceland or some other ridiculous team ??) and that was just like "oh fook me dead". Lets just hope Australia makes it first and opens up another can of hwoop as for England. Fingers crossed for Holland and Nigeria as well.

Yeah, the issue is more what a world cup qualification would do for the sport in the country, considering the deep s*** it's in now.

Pretty much a guaranteed spot just got taken away, and with it the sponsorship dollars and increased interest. Still, if we're good enough, we'll make it.
