Thats a fact but it's sure handy to just drop half a season of TV on one DVD to give to a mate than knocking HDDs around the country side. Besides with 500GB on HD already, it's nice to have something larger than sodding CD's or worse ye,t frigging tapes, to backup up the really important stuff. :) |

Spook it's cheaper to have a massive hdd than a dvd-burner Sooooo TRUE!! Think about it its like what? $4-5 per DVD-/+R which can store 4.7 gig which is like average $1 per gig plus the initial cost of 400-700 for the burner itself. GameDude (Hi Kath) have just updated their prices and they have like 100 gig hdd's for 200 bucks! More than half the price of the burner but more per gig than the media. I was going to get a Sony DRU (whatever it was) OCAU had a $575 special for OCAU members (Normally 699 @ GD). But then another HDD would still be cheaper! And really....how much stuff have you got to "back-up". If you were downloading 30-50 gig a month, maybe youd need a dvd burner. |

yeh, i think that Hdd's are better but what happens if the HDD fails?
Isn't there more chance of the HDD failing than a CD? |

Benneth. You can use RAID to create redundancy. That way, if a HD dies you don’t loose your data.
Having said that, HD's aren't a backup device by rule. If you want true disaster recovery you need to get the data away form the original device by some means and store it in a safe place. And yes, optical media is more reliable than a HD. ET |

on the subject of hard drives, those usb ide hdd caddies are a f***ing excellent idea for transporting hdd's around
plug 'n' play baby i still think dvd burners are not worth the money atm, i remember the first cd-burners..s*** speeds real expensive, poor software.... ie not worth the bucks |

I dunno. I was looking at an LG DVD burner and it's now about $390. That's a pretty decent price considering it'll burn and play DVDs, burn and play CDs. I know a DVD player is only $70 these days as is a CD burner. But it's a nice combo and you get the added functionality od burning DVDs.
Especially good if you're a home video enthusiast and want to encode your own movies. |

I like the thaught of throwing 30 DVDs in one of those cute fold out cloth caddies to transport my s*** around. like say *cough*stargate 'n stuff*cough* to QGL.
IF I threw 5 HDDS in my duffle and carted them around the country side, I'd be decidely more nervous. Scratch a DVDR = gosh darn. Scratcg a 120Gb HDD = oh F*CK!!!! |

I'm probably gonna sound like a mong but you can't burn retail DVD moofies on a DVD rom burner? Can you? Just that I heard there was some sort of protection or size limit that prevents it? |

Spook it's cheaper to have a massive hdd than a dvd-burner yeah but what if you have lots of stuff on your hard drive, go buy another one, then fill it up, and another one, soon you have 10 controller cards and a s***load of hard drives? I wouldn't mind a DVD burner, but as yet I can't think of any legit use I would have for one so I won't be getting one. When I have lots of s*** to back up then maybe |

but you can't burn retail DVD moofies on a DVD rom burner? I very much doubt you could burn DVD movies (unless decrypted with DVD Decrypter to HD first). You'd be better off ripping to DivX/Ac3 so you can get five or so movies per DVD. muhahahahaha |

That's a pretty decent price considering it'll burn and play DVDs, what was the speeds but? 4x dvd burning? or the normal 2x? (4x = 15 min burn right? and 2x i assume is 30 min?) |

The LG is slow (2x/1x) but it supports DVD Ram (admittedly old std) which is ideal for incremental file backups.
Trolling through the specs of the Sony 510, jeez it's fast. No DVD RAM but strewth, it does 4x for DVD anything and 24x for CDR. However, the DRU-510A will be the first drive to burn DVD+RW at 4X Damn, me thinks it might be teh winna |

There are a few ways you can *ahem* "backup" regular DVDs to a DVDR. The only thing that really stops you is size. And most, well quite a lot of DVDs aren't actually more than 4.5GB anyway. There are several retail packages that are so simple any dummy could do it.
As for the speed of the thing, *shrugs* 2x DVD burning is still quite fast. And frankly if I'm archiving several gig of data or creating my own "Funniest Skrybes Videos" I'll probably set it going and wander off and do something else anyway. |
