Grosby, a wooden model of a building (yes it was) ain't going to do jack s*** when there's a group of very agitated and possibly afraid passengers ready to belt the f*** out of him...

I seriously doubt the guy put any thought into what he took as a weapon, if he even was thinking at all. Honestly... everyone knows the doors are locked in cabins now, everyone knows that people have a hightened level of alertness, people are more likely to become sus. The guy was a nutter, pure and simple. The f***ing media loves to make it bigger than it really is.

Wowwee nutter goes on plane with wooden model, hits a flight attendent and yells stuff out. Sounds a lot like something Oasis would do!

Hunter - fear sometimes brings on aggression - correct.
But fear normally brings on panic and freeze. Especially in these times.

I have doubt that he would be able to get into the cabin - but it's lucky that some people were prepared to overpower him.

Yep, I've lost count of the number of times I've been on a flight that someone has charged the cockpit with a weapon, let alone the number of times I see it in "Retrospect" or "Flight Safety Australia".

Oh, wait, this is a rarity in Australian airspace. Still, I'd better just ignore it, since Hunter knows everything about every area.

A 38-year-old male attendant and 25-year-old female attendant were released from hospital last night after receiving gashes to the head and face during the struggle to subdue the attacker.

Witness Keith Charlton said the assailant, who was holding aloft two sharpened wooden stakes, stabbed the chief flight attendant "Greg".

http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/05/29/australia_jet030529
The man had been sitting in the seventh row when he suddenly lunged forward carrying two 15-centimetre stakes and shouting threats, airline officials said. There were 53 people on board.

http://www.abc.net.au/ra/newstories/RANewsStories_867744.htm
"The two flight attendants and two passengers tackled the man after he got from his seat, and approached the cock-pit, brandishing two wooden stakes. Federal Police say he was threatening to crash the plane. In the scuffle, the male attendant suffered a gash to the back of the head, while the woman suffered cuts to her face. The cabin crew members are still in hospital.

No, I'd pick up the nearest object and belt the living s***e out of them. Since the nearest object would likely to be someone's briefcase, or even a metal serving bowl from the flight attendant's trolley, or even someone's food plate. Hell a fire extinguisher would render most people unconscious, if not dead after a whacks to the head.

Its all well and good someone saying how they would have dealt with this situation or how they would have reacted. But until you are in the situation you have NFI how you will in fact react. Survival instincts may kick in and you may defend yourself admirably, you may also panic and s*** yourself, expose yourself to further danger by a wrong decision and be hurt or even killed.

Now unless of course you have been trained in defence hand to hand techniques and are current with your skills an average person can be easily taken by surprise in this type of situation.

The male attendant did what he did and luckily he survived. He did a great job. The wounds he received were pretty bad and due to the fact that he had his head down and the blows came from above.

If for instance the blows were being delivered from below in an uppercut tyep action he may very well have had an eye punctured or even worse the main arteries in the neck.

I have been trained in self defence and person control techniques, regularly and have been attacked a few times in my history. When it is sudden and unexpected your training is a plus but it isnt worth a pinch of s*** if the situation goes pear shaped.

Hunter as for saying you would have grabbed the nearest thing ect.. and bashed the crap out of him, that is a wholey unrealistic statement to make. You have no idea how you would react in a sudden violent attack.

Oh, and when the 'nearest thing' is the actual attacker you have zero time to go looking for handy weapons. Been there done that.

How would you know that I've not already been in a situation involving someone is quite intent on hurting me? You ever been held up (not stopped dummies) in the middle of a completely different city by yourself when you're 14 and unarmed? Sure isn't fun. I remember at the time that I knew I was f***ed if I didn't find somewhere else to be so that's what I did - there was NOTHING around to arm myself with. Now, I don't know how things may have turned out if I were armed with a knife or a lump of wood but one of us would have gone home with holes or bruises.

With due respect, and not intending to be melodramatic but I've had my fair share of dangerous situations. (Yes I am fully aware of your occupation).

Ever been mauled by a very angry dog? I was. It's not terribly fun having your neck torn open by a German Shepard and watching yourself bleed half to death all over the backseat of a neighbours car is it... yeah real fun. Couldn't do jack s*** - when a dog is determined to hurt you - it will. Am I afraid of dogs? No. I know how to deal with them now. I still have polaroids of the after-effects (was about 11 years ago now). Also, blood smells. Hate the smell of it.

Another example, had an intruder, for whatever reason, its irrelevant really, decided to prowl around our house one night. What was my first reaction? Stay very quiet and grab something (which happened at the time to be very large carving knife in the kitchen sink). Yes it probably isn't a GREAT idea to arm myself, and yes we've all had typo post about how they try and take the knife off you, etc... but the point is, if you are always ready for something bad to happen (I am a very negative person apparently) you will be prepared. Understand why I am so paranoid? Sure, I don't win too many friends with my constant negativity but its a good survival mechanism IMO. Oh and I won't even go into dealing with a******s at school who belt the f*** out of you. Boy can I run :)).

The instances you describe dont fall within the same category. 'Sudden' and 'violent' are different to being mugged and having a prowler in the house.

Lets put it in context. You're stting on the bus/train, reading your book/listening to your walkman. Suddenly and without warning the guy across from you sets upon you with a sharp edged instrument, wihtout regard for his own safety cause he's nuts and starts flailing you about the head and chest area violently. All takes place in under 2 seconds...you're telling us that because you are 'always ready' for something bad to happen you could handle the situtation effectively?

Have a long hard think about the scenario.

When I have been attacked I was on the defenceive as that was my job and situational awareness at the time..thats what I had been trained for, even now I would admit that the scenario I put forward above would take me by surprise and I too would be vulnerable.

There is a very good Los Angeles Police training video that shows than even an armed officer has very little chance of drawing his weapon if an attaker with a sharp edged weapon is within 21 feet. That's right 7 metres, and he will cut your or stab you before you can get your gun out of the holster. A knife/sharp object is a very dangerous item, conceable and wholey unexpected when produced in 'surprise' situations.

I really don't think you would be 'prepared.'

when a dog is determined to hurt you - it will

Incorrect!
I bet that you did something first. You probably looked it in the eye or ran past it's territory.
The correct way to deal is to curl into a ball - most dogs will sniff you then go away - the ones that don't sniff and walk off will bite something (your shoulder normally) then get bored or they'll just piss on you.

You probably screamed and ran - and the GSD gave chase.

OMG! HUNTER! Does that mean you don't know how to handle yourself in all situations!?!

And for the record - yes - I've been in dog attacks, I've been in personal attacks, I've been in group attacks. I've managed to avoid injury (all except once) simply because I froze up and didn't get aggressive. That's how I deal with the situation.

(Also, if a dog jumps up at you aggressivly - grab it's front paws and rip them apart - it breaks their breast bone and kills it right away)

Actually, all I did was be in the wrong place at the wrong time. By the time I realised it was there it was attacking me and had already taken a bite - I was 10 years old ffs - most kids at 10 would not physically be able to fight against an big, unhappy alsatian intent on biting something. What I did was calmly climb over a fence to safety and try to find some help. And until you've been lying somewhere bleeding profusely, bordering on unconscious you won't really know what its like. I don't recall feeling much pain, other than a really hot burning sensation on my neck. But it sure hurt afterwards, was in bed for 3 weeks dosed up on pain killers sleeping most of the time.

Also, grosby, I grew up with a german shepard (he ran away when I was about 4) and I have had another dog since 1995. He never bites me and I am now very aware of how to deal with dangerous dogs - never turn your back and run, it only encourages them to chase.
