Saw this from news.google.com, Sony has announced an update to PS2, it includes goodies such as Built-In DVD Recorder.
Sony Corp. unveiled a "crossover" PlayStation 2 video game console with a built-in DVD recorder and hard drive for storing data Wednesday, part of a strategy to combine technologies in hopes of boosting the company's brand and restoring its profitability.

The beefed-up PlayStation 2, called the PSX, will go on sale in Japan this year and is planned for the United States and Europe early next year, Sony executive deputy president Ken Kutaragi said. He refused to give a price.
I wonder if they'll release it in AU?

to quote someone else

Sony was going to make the CD-ROM extension for the Super Nintendo, but because of licensing, it never made it. The thing was going to be called Playstation Extension, or PSX. It was released as a standalone, modified version called just the Playstation. Somehow the X tagged along.

Scuzzy - That info is wrong. The Super Nintendo CD-ROM add-on was the Super Disc. The original "Play Station" was a Sony console which would play Super Nintendo cartridges and Super Discs. Nintendo were shocked by Sony's plans to exploit the deal in such a way, so they called it off and got Philips to develop the Super Nintendo CD-ROM add-on. Sony had to scrap the "Play Station", and began working on the "Play Station X" or PSX. Sony later decided to change the name to PlayStation, but kept the PSX name.

the PSX is the codename of the orginal Playstation it's not the actual name.

But the new PSX is not designed as a console. It was mostly designed for japanese consumers were space is precious. The dvd-recorder and hard drive are for entirly different purposes then that of a console. The fact that it can play PS2 games is a bonus.

Why in gods name would anyone want a friging dvd-recorder attached to a console system for ?

record dvd's, that is my guess

PS1 and PS2 and then if you are talking about both i thought you said PSX, as in.... the x exchanges the number, like Win9x

once again - that is my guess

Actually, this is more like a PS2 put into a DVD recorder.
