Just read from australianit.news.com.au, apparently a new legislation to be passed today will allow the parallel import of the games.
COMPUTER games and business software could become cheaper under legislation expected to be passed today by federal parliament.

The new parallel importation laws mean consumers will be able to search for the best software prices worldwide without having to pay the extra fees charged by Australian copyright holders.

The federal Government introduced legislation five years ago to give consumers direct access to CDs, which brought down the price of a top-40 album by about 20 per cent.

Well that is good news. $60 for a game rather than $80-100. That is getting to soud more resonable.

This is exactly why they mod chips should be legal, and region locking illegal.

The same should be done about DVD/DVD Players.

It is, its just the ACCC isnt doing anything to stop it.

Technically, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, are all currently breaking the law.

I don't think this will help us in any way. Companies aren't going to mark down the price of their games just because someone else is. The big ones anyway. Eg Harvey Norman. Most of the time they are at least a couple of dollars more expensive than anywhere else. They don't care. Their customer base and reputation is bigger enough.

Doesn't Harvey Norman price match thier competitors? If so then, when (enough) people come in and asked for the price match, I would think that they will be more inclined to take notice of the prices in the market place.? Granted, Harvey Norman may not react straight away but, given enough market pressure I'm sure they'll come around.

Its not only DVDs, but games. Games that are region locked (and they are) are illegal, as are the consoles that enforce this region locking.

Interesting...dunno how much of an effect this will have on prices tho.

As far as I can remember, CDs went down about $3 just after the law was introduced, and then crept back up again a few months later.

sort of you and sort of not

i think you'll find that in fact region locking is illegal with respect to DVDs, wrt other media then it's untested in the courts what you'd find is that it's not illegal to bypass any region coding systems (for games systems and other stuff)
