yeh im still researching for my pc ;) newayz would u recommend this asus mobo

Socket-A ASUS A7V8X / LAN VIAKT400 VT8235 Southbridge 200/266 FSB, 3 x DDR Sockets Max. 3 GB unbuffered PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 non-ECC SDRAM Memory (Note: PC3200 Max. to 2 banks only; PC2700 Max. to 4 banks only) , 2 x UltraDMA133 Controller, USB2.0, AGPx8, 6 x PCI Slot (one shared with ASUS proprietary wireless slot), Realtek 6 Channel CODEC S/PDIF Interface, Broadcom 10/100 LAN

or this gigabyte ??

S478/SIS648/ATX/3DDR/533FSB/ATA133/5PCI/AC97/6USB/6CNL/8XAGP

this gigabyte has the 533 fsb so would i be better off with it or should i go with the more 'reliable' asus board

i would be using the following compnents with it

AMD Athlon XP 2100
512 DDR 333 ram
MSI 128 mb GeForce4 Ti4200

is there any other ways the asus is better than the gigabyte (keep in mind im illiterate =))

the FSB on newer AMD's is either 266 or 333, depending on the chip.

for p4's, it's 400mhz for the northwood a's, and 533 for the b's (2.4ghz and above)

although, the Epox 8RDA+ is pretty much the best AMD mobo around atm, and u can get it for about $215 if u look around

I strongly recommend an Nforce2 board if you're choosing AMD.

Either the Epox 8RDA or the ASUS A7N8X will fit the bill nicely (both use the Nforce2 chipset). If you go this route, opt for 2 x 256MB sticks of RAM rather than 1x512MB so that you can run dual channel DDR (faster).

yep, will be a good setup. try and get a decent power supply (Aopen would be great) because you've got a high powered machine there. Last thing you want is instability :/

Get the ASUS A7N8X (preferably the Deluxe flavour) if you can afford it (the fact that you're getting a new computer seems to say that another $100 or less on that mainboard would be a good investment).

Now for some linkage...

  • ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
  • ASUS A7N8X (shows which features are available only on the deluxe version: Dual LAN as opposed to single; Firewire, and Serial ATA with RAID 0/1).
  • Tom's Hardware Guide article on the A7N8X compared with 2 other nForce2 boards with Dual-Channel DDR. I recommend you read the entire article.

Last I checked the Deluxe model was available from Umart for $309. Props to whoever it was on #gather who suggested I get the A7N8X. I'm still waiting on my new CPU though.
