Before we start, I'd best mention that we've up'd the player registration limit to 400. This is the absolute highest we can go this LAN, so if you still wish to come and haven't registered, please do so now! http://lans.ausgamers.com/. Also, I just thought I'd mention that the Cisco gear has arrived in trog's sweaty little palms, so no problems like last LAN with half the gear getting stuck in transit :)

For those who missed it earlier, this is the event schedule:
Saturday
- Counter-Strike 11am-7pm
- Quake3 Duel 8-10pm
- UT 2-6pm

Sunday
- Starcraft 12-6pm
- DOD 12-6pm

Console TBA on the day.

Now onto the actual announcement, and its a biggie.

QGL in co-operation with AusGamers is proud to announce that this weekend's QGL will be the official start of AusGamers League. Based partly off the successful season structure as employed by QGL the last two years, AusGamers League is a national gaming league being run by events in most Australian states and territories.

AusGamers League consists of three different games for its first season: Counter-Strike, Quake3 Duel, and StarCraft. As you may have noticed, all three games are listed as competitions this weekend. In fact, these competitions will be the first round of three to be played during the season. After three rounds, State Finals will be held, from which the top teams will be flown* to the first AusGamers National Championships.

Obviously, this is a huge development and one we're both proud and excited to be a part of. Unfortunately, we haven't yet had time to draw up formal rules (although they do match what was first announced in the QGL LAN announcement email). A website is being put together at http://www.ausgamersleague.com and I've been hurriedly writing up rules, league structure etc, during the last week but have yet to complete all the information necessary. Thankfully though, us QGL players in general are a smart lot and hopefully wont need too much hand-holding :)

As I said, there's no formal rules written up yet (just stuff scratched down on paper from various meetings). However, I can give a rough overview and answer any specific questions you may have in forum.

Counter-Strike will employ the same rules as described on the CPL-Pacific website, with the following changes:
- 6 on 6 (not 5 on 5 as at CPL-P)
- 40 min timelimit (not 32)
- 10 round winlimit (not first to 8)
- New (standard 1.1) de_ maps may be added to the selection

Quake3 Duel will employ the same rules as CPL-Pacific, currently without exception. StarCraft will (as far as I know) use the rules as employed at the exhibition event at QGL Finals last year.

When I say rules, I mean the in-game rules. For eg, the competition at CPL-P was double-elim; AusGamers League (somewhat obviously is not). AusGamers League employs the same basic structure as used during the QGL season last year; a detailed description of this structure will be up later this week. What you need to know right now: all competitors will play 3 matches per event (regardless of win/loss record), competitors may join/leave the league at any time (although not playing at all 3 events is a distinct disadvantage). League sign-up is "on the day".

Once again, my apologies for not having detailed material up on the web yet about the league. I'll be available pretty much all week to answer any questions people may have, whether by email or on the forum. I'll also do my best to make myself available before play commences on Saturday to answer any questions you may have on the day.

We're pretty excited about AusGamers League. In my opinion, it has the potential to revolutionise gaming in Australia: a well-organised, national gaming league could do wonders for the LAN scene and perhaps taking competitions to the next level. Now, we just need your support! Looks like we've got a pretty good registration number for this event, so this QGL should be a goodie :)

* By flown, we mean players will receive $250/player contribution towards airfare.

Part of the structure of AusGamers League (although I didn't mention it) is that all competitors can get a decent game, regardless of skill level.

Going to be using the new 'pro_maps' when the next point is released? Maybe give some life to the game.

I feel they _should_ be used, but there will probably be substantial discussion on it (eg, is changing maps mid-way through the league a good idea? How much time do players need to 'adjust' to the maps? etc)

a 6 month Q3 league? think there will still be enough interest in the game come the finals?

No one said the league was six months long.

In fact, these competitions will be the first round of three to be played during the season

which I hoped would indicate its a three round season (unlike last year, rounds are not split across two lans)

Congrats and thanks to all the QGL admins and associated ppl. This should be really good. It makes everything really competitive and it gives clans and individuals something to aim for.

It is great that QGL events are growing so fast and that just means more competition for everyone. I am also a big fan of the 3 definite games. This means the least experienced/newbies a chance to play more than 1 competition war. Will there be a competition at each LAN as well as these league matches?

Well Done Anyways, that is great news

I think last season is bad to go on, was about 9 months for 3 rounds and a finals
Nathan

In terms of events, we're (QGL) far more organised this year. All events (including the state finals) are already booked.

The 3 month break or whatever it was last year between the last round and the finals was obviously far from ideal. In retrospect, the split round thing was also kinda gay, since it caused the season to be a bit disjointed.

oh and with the new maps, will they be present this weekend? Cause that only gives teams 6 days notice to learn strats and prep for the comp

i reckon Rotterdamn and Inferno are good maps, but 6 days is not much time to draw up strats, (anyone made 2d maps????) heh, then to actually test those strats and make amendments wherever, then having to come to QGL and start the comp at 11am in the morning, it gives hardly any time.....

tho, its your decision, but i fink u should listen to players b4 you do (im sure thats probably your way of thinking, i hope :P)

anyway, put em in if you must, but helpme will rock uss on inferno :(

Fine administrator be like that.. Oh and How many "pro" comps for CS has there been in the last 18 months ? Hardly any.. In total prizemoney it doesnt come close to Quake3. Yes its finally getting some recognition but has it made the "advances" Quake3 has? Not even close. Quake3 started his whole "pro-gaming" era that we are entering into and dont you let your pussy little +attack +movedown ass forget it !

I agree with Fade2Black on the dates. I won't make this LAN before 6 - 7 on saturday night, and so far I haven't been able to talk my mates into going either (I know they read this - slack buggers!)

Since my preference is CS I'd like to have known earlier that it'd be played day one, not day two. And if I know that the next one is scheduled for xx/July then I can plan around that. And maybe I can whip my firends into attending a Lan instead of remaining online only byatches (heh sorry guys).

axis, you just came off sounding like a knob.

If anything cs's jump to the top of programing is going to slow down the growth.
When quake3 was the game to be played, it was all about the duels, now with cs you need at least a 5 man team to stick it together and win.

Even with the popularity, it needs to be 5 times more popular to fund a tournament, and these 5 people all need to retain thier interest/practice/dedication to the game.

I know I've said it a hundred times, but both games bore the f*** out of me and I wish there was something fresh to play .. but you cs players with hopes of grandure, you're the wannabees.
Lob's skills will transfer straight over to the next big 1v1 game that hits the cpl charts .. anyone getting hardcore in cs will be left holding thier nutsaqs.

hey this is in response to the upcoming ausgamers league, i was wondering bout the chances for a ctf league for q3a? its becoming more and more popular, with leagues such as the ocql. This i reckon would also be more competitive as everyone knows that the quake duel comps r gonna come down to the big 3 in pyth, lobby and huma. This is just my 2c, but i believe that a ctf comp would breath some life back into the quake community and would be a more competitive and fun league alongside the duel comp.

We considered this (especially me); I'd love to see a q3ctf comp but at the moment demand isn't high enough to warrant it. Remember its only going to be a short league, so if by the next season there's a lot more players getting into it, we'll happily include it.

Acid's points are good though; as an event organiser, running CS is a zillion times harder than running duels due to the sheer logistics involved in organising 5-6 times as many people. Plus, the fact that CS and HL have such stupid interfaces and almost no match management stuff in it AT ALL makes it really hard.

That said, I like team games more, but I think a focus on duel games could possibly be better for the 'industry' at least initially until it finds its feet. But, of course, 213,125,091 people are playing CS, which is probably more important to advertisers/sponsors.

Hell! I'd love to see Q3 CTF back, it was my favourite online game awhile back but it seems to have died off lately. Only problem with CTF is the same one as CS suffers - you need a team. So for llamas like myself who have no friends (or friends who don't/can't go to the LAN) then it's not viable.

Maybe there should be a poll about the games people would play?

I'm inclined to think its more likely due to the tireless work of the admin team, the wholehearted vocal support of Brisbane gamers, our honesty, great understanding of the community, our innovation (TM microsoft), but most of all a desire to dream and then make it a reality.

Think back to QGL this time last year. Would you believe me if I said "QGL will have 400 players registered for its June event in 2001" ?

The success of QGl is undoubtly because of the work that has been put though by the admin team, don’t get me wrong I am not attacking you, or any other of the admin team in that regard I also believe that the gamers in Brisbane pretty much rock, and willing to support anything that is good for the gaming community.

I have easily beleved that QGL could host hundreds of gamers, as the word of QGL got out, and QGL facilities got larger and larger. Assuming QGL can increase the size of its venue in the future I believe that QGL can go way past 400. I do believe that the power problems this weekend are going to be interesting to say the least.

The vague references to luck was not in regard to being lucky to get all these gamers, and to have great lans (although you must admit that is a small part of it), but more along the lines of some of the behind the action point of view.

With no real regard for some problems bought up, like the legal issues of the power boards at the LAN, no one (when I asked) knew the answer. Just assumed they where right.

Same with cabling, and legal responsibility of minors (and the gear) at the LAN. I do not assume that the gamers are likely to sue if a huge power surge writes a $2000 dollar computer off, but I reckon the parents just might. No one knew of the answer, and no one really cared to do anything but assume.

Only saying "well if you are interested go and find out"... Of course no one replied to my questions of "do we have anyone that we go to currently for legal questions", and can I get covered for the cost of asking a lawyer if QGL is indeed breaking the law by using non-professional power boards, the piggy backing of multiple power boards and ect.

So, in regard to your point, yes you are right. But I think QGL has extreme amounts of luck in regard to the fact no one has checked your legality on many issues, and just assumed you have already checked. Also in the regard that no one has tried to sue you for little jonny falling down from the top of the grandstand at 2am in the morning smashing his face into every bench seat on the way down.

Dont they? I'd hope so. :)
Typodemon

They do ... However the name of the game is to try and not use it. The more you use it the more the premiums. In fact some activities that have used there public liablity to often can no longer get public liablitiy.

Secondly there is a coverage range on most public liablities. Exactly what does it cover? Does it cover QGL if we don't strap a cable down properly.

But my main problem wasn't with the public liablity section, it was mainly with the power legalities.

Here are some things from my health and safty textbook for electrical engineering.

"One comman and unsafe practice involves 'piggy-backing' of appliances on powerboards. Piggy-backing can cause the powerboard to become overloaded and the powerboard will become warm or can even melt. The Piggy-backing practice generally will not provide an adequate electrical connectoin which may cause the arcing and sparks with the plug. These mis-use of powerboards can result in a electrical shock or electrical fire."

and this

The Health & Safety Regulations require that all electrical equipment be maintained and tested."

sorry to break the flow of flames here, but a serious question here...

at the end of the three rounds, it just the top clan or top 2 or even top 3 that travel interstate

would be kinda lame having 6 teams in the state champs...

top 2 clans would then make state champs like 12 or so teams (in cs comp)
if it were 6 teams (or thereabouts) it would be a pretty quick championships :P~

but yeah, will it be only the top clan, or top 2 clans or whatever?

Secondaly who cares about a few miniors hurting themselves ... I am more concerned about the other legal issues.

Hermmmm...

Lobsta, Its true that Quake 3 kick started the whole comp thing. However, Counter Strike has driven it further then Quake 3 Arena did. And together they will push it even further...

As for new games coming out, well its up to the Designers to design their game for competition play, games such as Halo dont seem to be compeition based... however a MOD could be made.....

Anyway, GOOD LUCK to anyone compeating in Any Gameing Comp!!!
and I guess Good Luck to those jolt sculling power houses :)

Rubicon;

The state finals are held on a per-state basis - ie the top x (say 6) QGL finalists compete at QGL, etc.

The National Championships are after that, and involve the top seated (say 2?) finalists from each state coming together in one location.

Part of the structure of AusGamers League (although I didn't mention it) is that all competitors can get a decent game, regardless of skill level.

I looked at the rules for q3 duel, and I still can not see how the average player could have a a dcent game (regardless of skill level) against hardcore Quake3 players.

Maybe I just can't see it.

Unless getting spanked like a bitch for 15 minutes is a decent game.
