I am currently running windows xp pro. Does anyone know of an operating system that will run on an intel based machine ( non apple) that is better?!?

linux is better, but i take it from the fact that u asked what is the best os that you will have no idea how to use it as it is not user friendly. i suggest sticking with windows xp, because finding games that are compatible with linux is a bitch

Yeah thats the only downside of linux.... not such good game support. Any news of a new windows o/s in development? I'm so sick and tired of XP already. If only apple made a version of O/S X for pc.... that be perfect.. i honestly couldn't care less if none of my pc games worked at first... i could always emulate in virtual pc for mac. But apple hasn't so i'm stuck with XP for now i spose. Thanks for your help

But how is 2000 better than xp? XP is a compilation of 2000, NT and windows 98. If there are properties in 2000 that are good wouldn't they be included in xp? Has anyone heard of a new o/s made by microsoft? Hopefully they'll release one THIS year..... more like the new mac os X.

Yeh, that's why it sucks :) XP is basically 2000 core with a bunch of extra bells and whistles, targetted more towards noob computer users (friendlier interace, etc).

Win2000 is rock solid, just sits there and WORKS 24/7.

I found some info in "Whistler". It looks like a p.o.s. It looks like a mix of 2000 and xp. Not much has changed except that it's likely to be more stable. Anyone got info on the Apple o/s that's supposedly being designed for intel platform machines? e.g amd's and intels ofcourse. That's really all i'm interested in unless someone knows about another o/s made by micros*** that's got nothing to do with predecessors to XP (i consider whistler to be a predecessor because it uses 2000 core- not to mention the fact xp does too). thanks thats all!

I use Windows XP on my gaming computer, and the family machine is on ME. XP is f***ing good. It's streamline, runs smooth, and has a lot more options for your settings.

The thing with Linux, is it isn't as user friendly as Windows, and there are some compatability problems with software, and sometimes hardware.

Currently, I have no motivation to ever use Non-Windows operating systems.

Hey guys

some of yous are gettin a bit confused, windows xp's codename while in beta stages was called "Whistler"..and windows Me was codenamed "Millennium". Yes their is a new windows os comming out, personally i dont think it will be that great, it looks and seems a more snazzied up version of xp/2000.. personally ive been using xp for quite some time and its the best. ive used the new versions of linux redhat/mandrake/lycoris and they are verry good, but they dont have the application support. they look and run like xp, but they have verry little application support. yes you can emulate windows apps in linux with wine or vmware but whats the bloody point, just use windows, basically the linux is designed for servers and that is bascially all its good for and if your dead board and want something new to do. if you want to see/read info on the new windows codenamed "Longhorn" check out www.msbetas.net

UMMM...can we say troll-bait =)
You will never reach a consensus as to which OS is best.

It's like asking Which Colour is Best - it is an entirely personal choice.

However, that is not to say that each individual Operating System doesnt have their own strengths/weaknesses. Following, it can be argued that there are 'recommended' Operating Systems for various requirements

Reliable/User Friendly Desktop - W2k/XP/OSX
Backwardly Compatible Game Machine - W98SE
Powerful and Customisable Desktop for non-Luditotry^ users - LINUX (distro choice a seperate issue)
Middle-Range Server - W2kServer (or Windows Server 2003...it is supposedly coming along nicely in RC2)
Proper Server - UNIX (again, with Linux, distro choice a seperate matter)

Of course, there is always Studly OS
*grin*

^ - self-invented word although it should obey grammatical inheritance, ie. luditotry users are users who could be said to be ludites

If linux wasnt such a prick id use that all the time. But unfortunately no. For what the OS can do, they sure made it a pain in the ass to set ANYTHING up, get rid of cmd and get some gui into ya for setting up s*** :). Thats my only tripe with it.
