Before I d/l them. Is the file size only meant to be 292K? Like is it just an add-on to the 8.1 drivers.

Hmmm.

You can't run and 3dmarks with directx 9 kieran..

They are all built upon 8.1. I tried to run 2001 and it said i dont have dx8.1 installed.

I got a performance drop, most likely because of my old hardware.

LOL! That 3dMark patch has been out for ages yet people still aren't using it :)

Anyway, there is some debate about whether the DX9 + Cat3s are good or bad for ATI people. Some people are reporting sh*thouse OpenGL performance but good DX. Others seem to be getting better performance all round, and still others seem to see no difference in performance at all. I fall into the latter category.

*shrugs* Oh well, can't complain when drivers offer more options and still maintain the same framerate :)

Oh and the demos look funky too. There is a new cel shaded demo and several DX9 based screensavers for ATI owners that look pretty cool. I like the Moebius strip one.

Well on my new computer with a 9700 pro i can't tell if it's better or not, coz everything runs at the refresh rate fps in 1600x1200 :P I think it might be a little better but it's hard to tell, and it's not very objective as the catalyst drivers bump up a notch too.
Those tech demos sure are nice though, pity it'll take a few years for those kind of effects to be common.

Why should I upgrade to these dets now? What games use any new features in 9?

No, it has the same memoryand the same core, but is slightly optimised, and has much better DX 8 support.

I have a GF4 mx440 and was pissed off after I found that out after I had already bought it. :(

My cheap STLabs MX440 is rather underclocked by default, hmm.. On my PC with these specs:
AMD XP2000+ AGOGA Palomino
ECS K7S5A SiS735 SD/DDR
Elixir PC2100 256mb CAS2.5 @ 2
STLabs Geforce 4 MX440 @ 270 Core, 365 Memory
Samsung Spinpoint 40gig 7200rpm 2mb
Fujitsu MP3153AT 15gig 5400rpm 512kb
200mm 240v Bathroom Ceiling Fan Casemod

I get around 3900 3DMarks in 1024x768x32, crappy clock spds are 333 mem and 250 core, can't handle 400mhz mem like it's sposed to but with 270 core I pick up 300 penismarks! pfft..
