Does anyone know if there's any difference? Like, I want to get my cable modem working at someone's place that has Foxtel, but no cable modem install. Is there any technical difference between the lines? I think my dad actually tried swapping my cable and foxtel lines over and both continued working normally.

I think cable has to be activated for that residence at the main office first. When the techie comes round he makes a phonecall to the office after the installation is complete. They can shut foxtel off to individual houses if you dont pay the bill so i think cable would work the same way

I know a guy who has a telstra cable connection and he decodes Foxtel on his computer with some software :)

I heard that if you have foxtel on at the same time your downloading it will cause you download to go slower

just something i heard

You're talking about the modem's identification, Phoenix. The modem has some sort of unique ID it sends (probably just it's serial no.) when it connects. They have to add that number to their database of valid numbers.

and as for regards to the shutting off the foxtel box, they just check you little card thingie

trog - no
it depends on what sort of attenuator the line has on it, cause the one on ur modem may be 9Db and on the foxtel 3Db may only be needed etc, so it may not work, still worth a shot

what?

its all the same coax for cable AND foxtel

least, thats what the fat ass tech said to me when he came out to a clients to install it.

hehe , we told him he had to install it to a linux router and he went white

i just laughed and mde him plug it in and went back to normal colour

guess they dont teach linux at the telstra techie skool

He could lose his job for that. They have to have installed it, see it working, and make you sign off that it was working before they're allowed to leave.

No they don't! The server was experiencing troubles the day we got our cable modem installed, so we had to wait 2 days just to get our modem authenticated.

Yeah, I know, I had the same problem when I got my Optus cable. But they are SUPPOSED to. Its their arse if they dont.

if you disconnect your cable modem from the cable line comming in from the street you will most likely be breaking Telstra's acceptable use rules. That is definately the case with optus.

the reason behind this is that the cable network is similar to a base2 network, where if you remove the network's terminators all the signals being transmitted throughout the network will not be dissipated but rather echo back through the network. Your cable modem acts in the same way as a terminator, and so disconnecting it will cause noise to be echoed back through the network meaning that the rest of your node to have a bad time..

the attenuator will make a difference

It is the same cable but the attenuator is dropping the signal strength. so if you put your foxtel box on a line with a 3db att. instead of a 9db att. you would get a signal overload. that would be bad

Well if the technician gets in trouble for leaving before the installation is complete, then the guy who installed mine wasn't particularly worried about it.

Telstra guy - "ok it doesn't work, i don't know why...cya I've got another installation to do"

Renton - "err what am I supposed to do with a modem that doesn't work?"

Telstra guy - "Dunno, muck about with it for a while and see if you can fix it....sign here"

Renton - "i'm not signing that, the installation isn't complete"

Telstra guy - shrugs shoulders.."Cya"

Needless to say I mucked around and got it working, the problem being he hadn't assigned a TCP/IP protocol for the adaptor.

Customer service at its best. On ya Telstra.

BOB the fruit... What exactly is this software to decode Foxtel onto a PC ?? I think I need it !!

The cables must be pretty close to the same, cos I used to have foxtel, then got bigpond cable installed, and all the tech did was put a splitter on the foxtel connection coming out of the wall to split it between foxtel and cable modem.

We get some s***ty cable Satellite up here, but that's it so far :(

Cables = Same

They just operate on different frequencies

And as for foxtel interfering with downloads? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA

Most BPA customers don't get much more than 60k/s anyway so put your minds to rest. In other cases though, there's plenty of bandwidth to allow for uncapped BPA to proceed as normal... then again i haven't actually witnessed uncapped BPA so it's still a myth as far as i'm concerned =)

I remember back in the good ole days when all there was was uncapped bpa. Sure, you had a tiny quota, and paid by the mb after that, but it was uber l33t.

well my modem was gettig big lag spikes so the telstra tech came out and removed both attenuator's one from connection to the modem and the other from the box outside to the start of the cable..
seems to have done the trick i still get lag spikes but they are not as large and a lot less frequency...

Is it really possible to decode Foxtel on your PC ? I have both Foxtel and BPA but it would be cool to be also able to decode Foxtel on my PC... I thought you would need a hardware device to do it? That would be the reason for having a TV set box ??

if your house has foxtel and not internet connected your can't just plug the modme in coz telstra hasn't activated the cable modem, it will powerup but the cable light n the modem will just keep flashing and not engage. we tried it at sprinkles old house and it didn't owkr and i have also tried it else where.

if you have internet and not foxtel your can't just get a decoder either. your house has to be activated for both.

hm, my encounter with a telstra techie was interesting - not quite what i expected

Telstra guy: gday, are you over 18, or is there anyone here over 18?

Me: nope..

Telstra guy: ah s***..

Me: (neblah blah, asking about heartbeat and stuff)

Telstra guy: nah, that should all be fine

Other telstra guy: You're over 18, aren't you? *wink*

Me: erm..yes..

Telstra guy: sign here.. you can do someone elses, or make it as illegable as you like

...

Telstra guy: thanks mate

bit off topic, but hey...

btw, 4 other techies have come since, i think they've got it right - spent an entire day here stuffin with the cables on the street, changing frequencies etc - our freq was too high, cables on wrong terminals... dodgy stuff like that.

They also put a little blue adapter on the end of the cable - anyone have any idea what this could be?
