I'm wondering if anyone here has read The Book of Five Rings by Miamoto Mushashi.

Its an awsome book that talks of mechanics of combat. The writer was a Samuria that never lost a fight, and a master at many things.

So has anyone read it?

I've already got it, my most prized book. Next to that I have Art of War, then the Hitch hikers Guide then the rest are equal.

Usually yeah, depends on the size of the publisher. Also, there may often be a small fee when ordering a single book.

It isnt the specific fighting art I'm interesting in, it is the ideas behind it that I am. Book of Five Rings was a damn fine introduction into such ideas.

I have read the book of five rings. It was interesting, but its not as if I changed my lifestyle to be a 1337 ninja. I have not read any other of this sort of book though so I have nothing to compare it to.

You'd be a mad bastard to try and live the way the book talks of :D

[Q] If you liked it, you should read Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Anyone knoe of other books along the same lines as these?

Any half-obsessed Samurai fan must have read James Clavell's 'Shogun'... :)

A good read indeed - but I'm going to look into this Five Rings book.

Cos no one can operate in the way that it instructs and still live in the modern world, there simply isn't time, unless you want to be a hippy dole-bludger Samurai.... :P

So if someone really wanted to they could. So the book can be used in modern times ;P

I doubt they could really - there isn't enough time these days to have a career and a life and do that samurai lifestyle s*** as well. Plus you don't need to - there are much more efficient and effective modern styles of defence and attack that don't require you to live like and outsider.

Yer but the book is talking more then just offense/defence its talking about a way of life.

A way of life that doesn't really make sense in the modern era: my point.

Go & hire the movie 'Ghost Dog' if you want to see a great (IMHO) example of a modern samuari...

fool AnaRot :P

Don't think for one moment that my extensive Chinatown movie collection doesn't dwarf yours...

All the old (but good) stuff is in Cantonese with dodgy English dubs/subtitles - Jet Li, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan (before he went $$$), Balo etc...

Well, that all depends on what you want in life dosnt it :D

If you even watch the ones with English overdubs then you don't deserve to even know Bruce Li's name.... those things are sacrelige!!! At least on some DVD's you can turn it off and read the subtitles and hear the real voices instead.

I like to collect old sorcery books written in the pre 15th centuary. (old stuff is interesting)

A good one is:
LEMEGETON CLAVICULA SALOMONIS
"lesser key of solomon"
Written around 1400-1600...first known magic book made, was compiled from manuscripts and other documents found that were written by a guy named king solomon.
This book was the first book that catalogued all known demons summoned by the solomon fella, it is not an evil book, but all other dark magic books were created using pieces of this book that had been changed around and their true meanings distorted...which solomon warns not to do inside the book:
"Origen saith that the magical art doth not contain anything subsisting, but although it should yet that must not be evil or subject to contempt or scorn; and doth distinguish the natural magic from that which is diabolical."

I find this stuff interesting, some of you might, theres an online version avaliable here:
http://www.esotericarchives.com/solomon/lemegeton.htm
Allthough the new printed version is more complete and has lots more pretty pictures.
King solomon was a real guy.
and no i do not try to summon demons in my room.

an omnibus is generally the 3 books in one, normally in hardcover form. just like a huge book, thats actually 3 1200 page books in one :p

peter hamiltion released one for a collection of novellas, i hoped he did so for this trilogy

Thanks again for that.

Glen - Given where the book is (hopefully) being ordered from, it could take from 1-2 weeks all the way to a few months.

They are going to check on monday if they are 100% able to order it. They'll let you know.
