make sure it's not in PIO mode. make sure it's in DMA

Is your CD-ROM on its own IDE channel? If not is it slave or master? See if DMA is activated. Actually, DMA shouldn't affect anything in this case. Ignore that :)

As has already been mentioned, it sounds like your drive is running in PIO mode - which basically relies on the CPU to control the data transfers over the bus. By default, Win2k and Win9x don't enable DMA for CD-ROMS, and no doubt XP probably doesn't either.

Go to: Control Panel->System->Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers then go right click the channel your CDROM drive is on, then go to advanced settings and then see if DMA or PIO is enabled.

Genocide: check out your BIOS to see if that particular IDE channel (Secondary Slave) is being forced to use PIO.

Also if it's any old drive it's very possible it can only use PIO mode.

ok. heres some more info.

win2k service pack 2. asus a7v133c. diamond data cdrw 30*6*4 is the cd-rom. i'm running the latest via 4 in 1's.

this started since around about my last win reinstall. there is no option in the bios to force any pio mode, although the boot screen does report the drive is running in mode4 (whatever this is. PIO?) as far as i can tell i cant change it from anywhere.

man I don't think ANYONE saw the picture. I laugh at you all.

I'm sorry but I don't know how to fix it I just thought I'd mention the tardness of some people.

Check your BIOS settings, maybe something in there is set to PIO, if you have power DVD run it's little dma check utility thingo to see if it is set to DMA and if it's not, try setting it. Other than that, I don't think an IDE cable would make much difference since my cd rom says it's on DMA and it's only an old IDE 40pin/40 conductor, it's not a 40p/80c ATA100 cable.

edit: I shoould have refreshed before I posted :(

Mode 4 is PIO, maximum transfer rate of 16 MB/sec. Speed plus.

seeing it says DMA if available in both boxes and is set to PIO, maybe the drive is too old like someone suggested?

I had exactly the same problem Geno, try getting new firmware for your Cd-Rom and it will fix it. I had to flash my Plextor from 1.02 to 1.04 and now it works perfectly in DMA rather than pio

Weird, I never had to change anything to make win2k use DMA on my cd burner.

Mine used to work in DMA also until I added 4 more drives to my machine and change motherboards from an Asus A7M266 to Asus A7V266-E. Once I had this new configuration my plextor just would not go out of PIO.

I spent a day trying to work it out then decided to check plextors site for a new firmware and found a new one. Sine then it has worked perfectly.

Actually, a box came in today, and to cut a long story short, we installed a new 52x CD-ROM and surprise surprise it would only run in PI0 Mode 4 - no DMA. But wait it gets better - the old 40x ran perfectly fine in UDMA/ATA 33!

the firmware update fixed it, although really that makes no sense since i havent changed ANYTHING to make it run in PIO.

What a cool thread, you guys set this up nicely. GeN asks for help, dangles tells everyone that is attempting to help GeN to get f***ed.

Cyph is exactly right. In win2k all drives are auto set to what you have set in your BIOS. If you have a look in ur bios (well most latest biosii) you will find DMA and PIO modes. You can select what you want in there. Default is DMA.

However in win98, it simply uses PIO unless you tick the little DMA box thingy in ur drive specs. I just worked that out the other day when my gateway was giving me hassles.

Oh and my burner will not work in DMA. Its very old so i assume the old drives dont really have support for DMA :(. Need to buy a new one someday...

Wrong. I have UDMA/ATA 33 set for my CDROM in the BIOS and Windows 2000 defaults to PIO mode. This is the case and has been the case on a heap of other computers that I've installed Windows 2000 on.

Strange...

Every time i have installed win2k my install detects whats in the BIOS and sets it in the settings in win2k?!!?!?!

I set my burner to PIO a while ago and it detected that. I set my new hdd to UDMA 5 and it detected it too! I have installed win2k about 3 times, always detected my bios settings.
