Hi all,

I'm just wondering what peoples general thoughts on upgrading your graphics cards are (ie. GF4 or waiting for GF5 etc.)

Oh, and btw, if anyone is upgrading atm, I am interested in getting an older card (maybe around gf2) as well.

Cheers

No... it'll probably be 12 months or more before the GF6 will be out. A product generally has at least one refresh before they move onto the "next gen". eg: GF2/GF2 Pro/GF2 Ultra, GF3/GF3 Ti, GF4 Ti (I expect a GF4 refresh shortly if nv30 takes longer).

Economically speaking it makes sense to buy as far behind the cutting edge as you can bear. Case in point Radeon 8500 is available for about $280 now. It was approximately $800 when it was first released. Same deal with the GF3 and GF4. I can't bear to be too many generations behind so I'm currently trying to buy one gen old. ie: If there are GF3 and GF4 on the market I'll buy the GF3. My next upgrade will probably be to a Radeon 9700, but I'll wait till the NV30 is released first.

I've been working on a buying guide for video cards (a how to choose, not a which is better) to put up on my website. It's about half done at the moment. I'll try to remember to post a link here when I've finished it. But to really summarise it - figure out what games you want to play and what you need to play them on and buy accordingly. So if all you play is Counterstrike at 1024x768 buy a GF4MX - you DO NOT need a GF4 Ti4600 to play it. If on the other hand you want to play a game like Commanche 4 you really need a GF4 Ti4600.

well, atm I have 4MB onboard, so anything would be an improvement (CS is the best graphics in a game I can run, and that's with software enhancement)

§PLAT, yeah I know it seems obvious but a lot of people don't seem to bear it in mind. They buy the newest and best when they don't really need it. How many people do you know that have bought GF4 Ti 4600s that only play Quake 3 and Counterstrike? ;)

Too many people get caught by the hype produced by the video card companies, the review sites, their friends and don't stop to think whether they really need something.

You can't expect too much for 200 bucks.

Yeah the GF3 Ti200 is a nice middle of the road card (it's amazing GF3 = middle of the road ;)

It's got support for basically all the current features, vertex shaders, pixel shaders, T & L, it performs pretty damn fast as well and it's not bad for overclocking. They're a good choice if you can find them to buy.
