I am running 1600x1200 @ 60hz, and I don't know how to get the refresh higher in Q3. Monitor will handle 1280x1024 @ 100hz and 1600x1200 @ 85hz..

Pls Help

Add into your q3config.cfg file the following setting:
seta r_displayRefresh "85"

Of course replace 85 with whatever refresh you want.

HAHAH. :(

Play at a refresh rate where you can get 120Hz.(640x480 and 800x600 for me). Do what mr cerb said. And if you cant get it to run because absence of a 9x operating system, use powerstrip.

b you're backwards, r_displayrefresh should work in 9x, actually it should even work in 2k if you're not using an nvidia.

It's a Windows bug. They took away the optimal refresh rate option, so DirectX and OpenGL display modes run at set refresh rates.

The problem with Nvidia cards is they changed the drivers so all the old utils used to get around this bug don't work, unless they've been updated since the change was made.

Yeah, that's true. I was just pointing out that the main problem is caused by Windows, not by Nvidia cards.

at the console type "com_maxFps x" where X is the maximum frames per second you want to achieve. Bear in mind, though, that it will go a few frames over this normally. I have mine set to 117 and it normally sits on 125.

You may also want to check in your video card drivers to see if there's an option to force vsync on.
